Variants:
    The GRF-3S was a proposed simple upgrade to the ubiquitous Griffin long used by the LCAF and
    AFFS.  Replacing the large laser of the 1S model and the standard PPC of the 1N model with
    an extended ranged version of the latter improved on both models. The particle cannon was
    backed by a ten rack of long-range missiles enhanced with an Artemis IV fire-control system
    at range and a pair of medium lasers close-in. The missile rack is fed by two tons of
    ammunition in a CASE-protected bay, and switching over to ferro-fibrous plate while
    maintaining the same mass of armor greatly improved overall protection on this model. To
    make room for these changes, the skeleton was switched for a much lighter endo-steel frame,
    and the single heat sinks of the original machine were exchanged for double-strength heat
    sinks.
    
    The design competed against the GRF-1DS, which ended up obtaining the contract in lieu of
    this design. There have been some complaints of interference in the trials that were
    conducted between the designs, but nothing was ever proven.
