Overview:
The vehicles role on the battlefield had steady increased since the last succession war. Although the abillity to produce Mechs was back in the hands of the Great Houses, vehicles were cheap and plentiful.
The Lyran Alliance was especially concerned with the promince of the tank on the modern battlefield and wanted to come up with a way to counter this. The result was the Panzershreck.
Capabilities:
Although tanks can pack a very hard and very sustained punch, they all have one universal weakness. No matter how much armor a designer puts on a vehicle they can all be taken out by a single lucky shot due to their more open and fragile construction.
The Panzershreck attempts to take advantage of this weakness. Mounting only twenty rockets, the Panzershreck looks ammazlingly weak. However, it can pack a serious punch, and because of its weight, it will only have one chance to fire off its salvos anyway, before being forced to withdraw, or destroyed outright.
Using speed and a VTOL's manuverability the Lyran Alliance attempts to capitalize on the concept of a single strike, single kill phenomenom. This depends on a great deal of luck, and a bit on manufacturing power.
Battle History:
Pirates, displaced after the Clan invasion, had slowly been working away from the Invasion Corridor and up and around both the Draconis Combine and Lyran Alliance border. When they were low on supplies they would raid and take what they could.
Knowing that a group of pirates was opperating near the Lyran border, the commander of one of the defensive corridors, the name currently withheld due to security reasons, decided that there were to many vital targets for his forces to defend them all against a small and determined force. He was to spread out. So he calls for reinforcements and they send him a strengthened battalion of Panzershrecks and soldiers with records a mile long.
After contemplating suicide, the commander placed the Panzershreck battalion onto one of the less vital planets and told them to hold the line. A single tank and infantry company made up the local militia and would act as a reserve force.
The pirates, of course, chose this planet for their raid. They had a number of tanks that needed engine parts: valves, fuel injectors, fan belts and the like, and they decided the best place would be the mining equipment manufacturing plant. Their dropship landed and disgourged a number of tanks and the pirates four BattleMechs, one of them a Clan Kraken.
The pilots of the Panzershrecks scrambled to their machines and prepared for combat. Flying NOE and moving quickly the Panzershrecks went forth to buy the militia as much time as necessary to evacuate the civilians and protect the main road they saw the tanks, stretched out in a thin skirmish line, the four battlemechs walking among them. The Kraken was almost dead center in the line, definitly the commanders Mech. The commander of the Panzershrecks ordered a charge.
As they came in the air filled with the gun fire from the Kraken, Shells tore through the tiny Panzershrecks and threw them to the ground, but over 40 of them were moving on the 16 pirate units. As they came within a few meters of their targets almost 800 rockets went sailing down to the earth to crash into the tanks. Almost immediately 3/4s of the tank colomn was knocked out of action with severe damage or hurt crews. The pirates were in shock and realing, but the Commander kept his head and kept up a steady rate of fire on the Panzershrecks.
As the tiny helicopters pulled back to a safe distance the commander opened up with his machine guns to finish off any wounded men so their would be no prisoners and the BattleMechs started to walk back to their dropships. Suddenly a single panzershreck, whose rockets were armed but not fired darted in front of them and took off for the hills where the dropship had landed. The pilot was one Warrant Officer Leroy Patts, a convicted murderer who had been offered either the firing squad or line duty in a Panzershreck. As he crested the hill flying NOE he flew his Panzershreck into the open maw of the MechBay and fired his rockets point blank The multiple explosions and the crash of the 5 ton helicopter tore into the Dropships fusion core, knocking it out and almost coring the ship. The pirates surrendered when they realized they had no way out and that the Panzershrecks would be back to finish the job. With fade away into the mountains, they knew they had lost.
Warrent Officer Patts was given a state funeral and his family received a pension for his actions.
Variants:
Currently the only varient of the Panzershreck drops both rocket launchers and puts in a place for a squad of troops. This, and the tiny amount of storage space on the design, allows the Panzershreck to make a very comfortable troop transport. Unfortanitly the design is completely unsafe for bringing into a combat zone due to its nonexistant armor.
Deployment:
Currently the Lyran Alliance is mass producing Panzershrecks and sending them to the front lines on all fronts. Against the bandit kings they have become remarkably adept, as the sudden strike of a Panzershreck can cause enough damage to make a pirate withdraw. Especially when they see a whole new company coming in to fight.
The only major problem with the Panzershreck is its reputation as a flying coffin. As such it has become much like the JR-27 ordance transport, a duty that only the worst of the worst are assigned to. As such Panzershreck pilots are desperate men and are willing to takr great risks to regain their status in the Alliance military to be pulled out of the Panzershreck ranks.

RL10 - 3 Heat, 6 Damage, 18 Range. A +1 modifier to hit because of non-existent targeting systems, and it`s a one-shot.
