Can a mech using Stealth armor equip an Angel ECM in place of a Guardian ECM? I know HMP won't allow you to do this, but is there any reason that you couldn't replace the Guardian with the better, slightly heavier, Angel?

Yeah before I had HMP I always assumed you could use angels with stealth armor ... I mean it makes sense. HMP "taught" me that this was wrong, but never explained why. I think it's just because angels are level 3 and stealth it level 2 and stealth was invented after the angel ... so there is no way a printed rule could ever have happened to address this. I'm sure if another edition of max-tech was ever printed it would offer angels a as usable with stealth armor.

So, if you were running a campaign, and someone had stealth armor, would you allow them to equip Angel instead of Guardian? I'm probably asking for a reason, as I'm sure you know.

I was thinking about this the other day. Strange coincidence.

I'd let someone use an Angel in place of a Guardian for stealth armor. It makes sense that the more powerful Angel would possess all of the Guardian's capabilities, including running stealth armor.

lol ... indeed. I'm turning you into a munchie player ... haha. I think the only way to do it in HMP would be to just leave the extra tonnage free and unused and just consider the guardian an angel.

My answer would be "no". The rules for Stealth Armor are specific, and it calls for the Guardian ECM suite.

Logical? Probably not, but the rules are pretty clear.

Good thing I wasn't asking you then.

Excellent. When you're figuing out the cost breakdown for my "munch-mobile", calculate the cost for Angel and not Guardian. And since I need to lose 1/2 ton, get rid of one of the Clan ER Small Lasers.

Hmm. Even if the Liao scientists didn't build it for Angel ECM, perhaps it can still work. ECM is ECM, more advanced or not. I'd think you need Elite techs, but it should be possible.

They've got one pretty elite tech ... it'll probably just take some additional time to do is all. I'm of the opinion that ECM is ECM ... and the Angel is nothing that the Guardian isn't, just more.

Ahh but the #1 rule of any game is that the rules that exist serve only as a suggestion and the players should feel free to modify them to suit their play styles. I understand following the rules to the letter at a convention where you have tons of people from different play groups who all need to play in the same sandbox ... but in a less formal, extended campaign I would actually highly endorse people breaking the rules and making new ones to give their campaign a little more diversity and life.

I agree, but I always answer questions about the rules with what I believe the "official" answer would be.

To be honest, if someone is going to decide to "break" the rules in their campaign there's little reason to ask the question.

Nope you are right. As a policy it is a good idea to try and keep everything in the scope of the rules since this is a public forum about battletech "the game with the rules" .

Demonstrating my ignorance here:

I know Angel, I know Guardian.

What is stealth armor?

Further: From what I remember, the purpose of Beagle was to defeat Guardian, and the Purpose of Angel was to defeat Beagle. So maybe stealth armor (just going off the name, i don't really know) was designed as a stop-gap for Guardian, while Angel doesn't really need the armor since it can already defeat most detectors...
