and we have had two mech match ups and they have led to interesting conversations.. so in the spirit of good fellowship and credits....

The Wasp vs. The Stinger.

Two classics. Any variant against any variant. These are the classic scouts, the tried and true, and I'm curious as to experiences. I've always found the Wasp to be the best ride. I trust it, I love it. The Stinger is good, but that Wasp just has that special feeling that makes it worth the ride.

In my opinion, they might as well be the same mech as neither is better than the other. They are too similarly matched.

Any variant against any variant is a bit too broad. Still, both machines need to stay at top speed to avoid damage. Thus the ability to shoot at (and hit) the other is also important. I'd think there are a few Wasp variants that are automatically at a disadvantage, such as the stupid small laser boat Any model with a range advantage can expect to have a better chance to win, I'd say. Take special note of the STG-6L and the WSP-3S...

I like the Stinger better. Wasp's are notoriously prone to taking it in the chin.... or .... Maybe that's just me...

I think its just you! Smile Actually, the reason I really like the Wasp is the SRM system in its primary configuration. I know a lot of people don't like leg mounted weapon systems, but I do. I don't think it really limits the mech in anyway. At least, I have never been limited by them.

Try this: If you have a leg mounted LRM launcher, you can actually fire over a hill or obsticle using indirect fire rules.... however, you can see over the obsticle so its no longer indirect. Smile So your leg mounted weapons can still fire!!! Unfortanitly the largest weapon you can make to take advantage of this is the LRM 10.

Back to the Stinger and Wasp. I always felt that the Stinger was lacking something. The Wasp has range and knock out punch, and thats a beautiful thing.

I really agree with Mordel, there is not that much difference between any of the models to make a huge difference. Same armor and speed on most.

I personally prefer the STG-3G Stinger if I was going to get to pick. After that it would be the stock Wasp.

Between the two stock models, I'd have to go with the Wasp; same armor as the stinger, same speed, and better weapons.

I agree with mud. Waaaaaaayyyyyyy back when we took three stock stingers against one stock wasp (four players) and we couldn't take it down. The movement mods with stock pilots were always very high and the wasp always had us outranged with the srm vs our stinger's MGs, of course it didn't help that he won initiative almost every round. We eventually gave up chasing him.

my vote would go to the Wasp.

question is if you were going up against infantry would you want the Stinger with it's MGs, or the Wasp with inferno rounds (also deadly against vehicles) for it's SRM?

Wasp- If you use fluff in a roleplay, it has a comfortable cockpit, not a coffin like the one on the stinger.

I would favor a version that had the ability to reach out. That would force the other mech to be in the "one worse" category on range, add in the movement, plus the fact you do not have to "charge in" to close range, would give a good advantage. I regard the Light mechs as "light Infantry" they sneak around looking for the enemy and only fight in ambush, or when cornered.

I'd prefer the inferno SRMs over the M.G.s for anti-infantry duty any day, and I'd prefer standard SRM warhead rounds over M.G.s for anti-infantry duty most days. Charging straight into a hornet's nest of infantry with machine guns always seemed pretty stupid to me; I'd rather stand back and barrage them from a safer distance where they can't swarm or kneecap my 'mech. Of course, in most cases you won't even have to fight dug-in infantry, you can just go around them, or over them if you have jump jets.

Good points Mud. I like the inferno's also because of range and being able to take out any non-mech unit (infantry, vehicles, battlearmor & protomechs) that blow their 8+ roll, but on the other hand you've got the Stinger with two MGs able to throw out 4-24 points of damage to an unarmored infantry platoon, possible doubling that damage to 8-48 if they're stupid enough to be out in the open. IMHO that makes a pretty decent anti-infantry scout/ light garrison duty Mech.
