I always told myself I would answer this. So I am finally doing it, as I am on vacation, I have free time.
Main thing is it allowed my mind to run free about humanity. That is what drew me into the game, man was still man and he had cool killing machines. For those that do not understand, Politics, Religion, Ethics, had not changed much even so much had advanced. Those who have played with me or in my games truly understand this. Big mechs fighting is kind of cool but it is the backdrop that is more critical. That is why I have done some much work. I have reams of stuff; but most is locked away currently.
So besides cool memories and I know most of my players have even cooler ones than me. It is fun to be a player when you are challenged, do not know what is going to happen and fun when you pull it off. Ask Alex Knight about being cornered, or Ruger having his first character ambushed and whacked. But then having the victories is even sweeter. I still have old friends bring up memories of my games, which are very gratifying.
Beyond that I have a ton of lead or Raladium as it was called for some time. Not a great painter but I gave it a whirl, and players liked to see their mechs painted in unit colors. To me gave me that more quite hobby and a sense of accomplishment when they were done.
Even today it affects me, “PAPA what is that? A Robot? Robut? Robot. Its’ Scary, step on me” So my son thinks they are cool and my wife should be worried, give me 10 more years and I will teach him.
But the one down side, my ability to GM other games, especially fantasy has been affected. I think way to Sci Fi and too humanly brutal.
OK I have meandered but in short, it has given me memories and allowed my mind to wonder and plumb the depth of human interaction in a potential future.
AWAD- HMMMMM maybe time to get a game going again.

Yeah...like after your GM offs your first character, then ambushes your second character twice in two back to back battles, punching the head off of his 'Mech in both instances, only to be thwarted by the player making his piloting rolls to eject just before impact both times...and then in the final battle of the campaign, having that same player blow the head off the lead enemy's 'Mech, then transfering all his edge to the second major bad guy only to have him taken out a turn or two later...
You mean stuff like that?

Got into the table top version of the game during a Hurricaine party while I was going to EOD school in FL back in 95 (hurricaine opal). we spent 48 hours gaming by candle light with nothing but the tac handbook and the box set. I love every minute of it, but it has made me thousands of dollars poorer, but has kept me outta trouble...you know what they say about idle hands... _________________ You ask me if I have a God complex?...let me tell you something....I AM GOD!

Well Bombtech, your "idle" hands sure have made an impact on the mini painting scene. sure wish I had more time to paint and play. Just moved into new digs in Belchertown (next to Amherst & Northampton)....I'm getting a little closer to NY..... . glad to see that something as horrible as a hurricane turned out to bring you into BattleTech. We can only hope Isabel keeps her damage light.

Does anyone play the btech sim-pods anymore?

Hehehe heck I use to run the ones in Atlanta till they bosses got changed and I couldn't afford to live off the money anymore (15 hours a week and a trip to Austrlia you do the math) and a GM was dumb enough to yell at me after asking to go to my grandmothers funeral.
Anyways.... It was fun and all just a shame the jerks got in charge though I hear the new "Firestorm's" pod rock.
Worth a look next time you are in Chicago.
As for how it changed my life? Gave me a set of balls when playing games like Everquest and I actually get off my mage arse and take charge.
Call me crazy but a god doesn't see as scary as the first run in with a Diashi hehe.
