Hey all, I've been expirementing with VTOL designs lately, trying to make an "assault" VTOL. However, I'm stymied on choice of weaponry. I want to be able to drive off single 'Mechs with a lance of 30 ton choppers. Any ideas on what I should arm it with?

For starters, we have the Yellow Jacket which boasts a Guass Rifle.
The problem with VTOLs is that the rules for them aren't the greatest, so we have to deal with what we have. A helo that I've been considering is one that I call the Bird-of-Prey. It takes the weapons load off of a 3058 Warrior and replaces it all with twin LRM 5s, and medium lasers. Alone, it can target light units and pin heavier targets into place for reinforcements to finish. In packs, it should be able to hurt even most light mechs.

I was thinking SRMs. I'm not going to linger for very many turns, but I quickly want to present the choice of "Move or Die!". Maybe an RAC?
Or maybe a large bore Ultra...

Try a RAC instead. Even with the new rules, VTOLs are still just to vulnerable to cost-justify an XL.
And part of the beauty with an LRM 5 is that an SRM 4 and four Machine Guns all weigh as much as it does. This actually makes it very handy when figuring out potential variations- especially for those like me who occasionally attempt to translate modern military equipment to BTech.

Advice noted and I plan to act on it, as for me, I'm off to do my homework researching real weapons of war. I fixed the problem with A.V.T.O.L., and all I need is a name and good fluff before I post. Thanks for the help.
Although, if anyone else has ideas, feel free to post, I'll always accept contributions and ideas.

I'm going to use this design to harass a medium star.

It's a good one ICER. Put that ATM on the front though, or you can't target with it...at least I don't think you can, anybody know about body weapons? Too bad the Inner Sphere doesn't get ATMs.
P.S. I finished the chopper design, but it seems wasteful for me to go ahead and create another thread for it, so I'll post it here.
BattleTech Vehicle Technical Readout
VALIDATED
Type/Model: Sea Hawk V.T.O.L.
Tech: Inner Sphere / 3060
Config: V.T.O.L.
Rules: Level 1, Standard design
Mass: 30 tons
Power Plant: 100 GM Cold-Start I.C.E.
Cruise Speed: 86.4 km/h
Maximum Speed: 129.6 km/h
Armor Type: Durallex Light Standard
Armament:
4 Harpoon SRM 4s
1 Mydron Minigun Machine Gun
Manufacturer: Fox-Tech Retrofitting
Location: New Avalon
Communications System: Datacom 60
Targeting & Tracking System: Fox Fury 230 Dual Lock
==Overview:==
Following their recent success with the Gannet transport chopper, Fox-Tech Retrofitting set their sights on a heavier design for sale to militaries. After again tabling their designs at Mordel's Bar and Grill over some hamburgers the engineers decided on the Sea Hawk. Talking late into the night, many designs were tabled and discarded before that decision, including a RAC/5 prototype and an Ultra AC/20 carrying monster.
Despite the apparent informality of these design sessions, the products created have been very successful. Recently, critics have dismissed it as a larger Cavalry variant; but crews love it for its simplicity and adaptability. Although not a true Omnivehicle, the Sea Hawk is remarkably easy to reconfigure, most weapons are held in place with several bolts, which are simply removed and used to support the replacement weapon. The Targeting and Tracking System was created in house for Fox-Tech, and has been specially designed to accept many variants of weaponry with little extra programming.
==Capabilities:==
Although it was built using low technology weapons and components, woe to the opponent who mistakes the Sea Hawk for a pushover! The 100-rated General Motors Cold-Start internal combustion engine is able to run in almost any environment, on a variety of hydrocarbon fuels. It can propel the Sea Hawk up to almost 130 kph, near the maximum speed of the Cavalry it has been accused of copying. However, when armor is taken into account, the Sea Hawk is clearly the superior machine. Many consider this moot point as the two craft work rather well together, and so will likely be placed in mixed lances.
The main anti-armor weapons on the Sea Hawk are 4 Harpoon SRM-4 launchers, capable of inflicting serious damage on any target, especially when a whole lance of Sea Hawks disgorges their missile loads. The secondary anti-personnel weapon is the Mydron Minigun, a machine gun capable of firing more than 625 300mm rounds a minute. This helicopter carries enough ammunition to sustain fire for several minutes.
The true jewel of the Sea Hawk is the Fox Fury 230 Dual Lock T&T system. The system boasts a 90% success rate against even the swiftest moving targets and has shown incredible resistance to enemy jamming techniques. In addition, the Fox Fury system has been preprogrammed to compensate for the recoil, range, and speed of most missiles and autocannon rounds made in the Inner Sphere, including specialty ammunitions.
==Variants:==
The Sea Hawk's unique weapons systems allow for a great many field variants. Among the most common are one that trades the SRM4s for LRM5s. Rocket launchers, machine guns, autocannons and even lasers have been seen occasionally. Many commands also remove the machine gun for more armor, or ammunition.
Of interesting note is a factory variant Sea Hawk equipped with Torpedo launchers and intended to be used as a ship killer. Our Order believes that this is the true design of the Sea Hawk. Also of interest is that four Sea Hawks with an unknown destroyer have been seen off the coast near the Fox-Tech facility. This new destroyer maybe a Fox-Tech design undergoing trials...
==Deployment==
So far, mercenary companies and the Star League have been the only main buyers.
