Overview:
    When the Von Paulus was introduced in 3020, it represented one of the first new BattleMech
    designs introduced since the fall of the Star League.   It was introduced to meet a need for
    an urban defense unit to help protect vital Steiner economic and manufacturing centers.
    To this end, the ?Mech was designed to be relatively well-protected and have a potent
    punch while still being relatively inexpensive.   A quad chassis was selected to help
    concentrate the armor protection around the torso and primary weapon system.   While not a
    fast ?Mech, the Von Paulus is intended to be a tough defensive fighter.

Capabilities:
    Because it is intended to be a defensive fighter, the Von Paulus is designed to carry as
    much armor as possible.   The ?Mech is designed to be just fast enough for an urban
    environment, able to maneuver in heavily built up cities and industriplexes yet without
    excess speed that would be wasted in close-quarters battle.   The Von Paulus internal
    structure is designed around a heavy gun mounting designed for the massive Defiance
    ?MechHunter autocannon.   The gun mounting is able to absorb the impacts of both incoming
    fire as well as the recoil of the weapon itself.   This makes the ?MechHunter incredibly
    reliable and accurate.   The armor on the front of the chassis is engineered to form a heavy
    glacis wrapped around the barrel of the autocannon, further helping protect it.   This has
    also given the ?Mech a distinctive appearance, leading one test pilot to dub it ?a Hetzer
    with legs?.
    This has led to an unfortunate tendency for some commanders to unfortunately consider
    that the Von Paulus was shares more than just its appearance with the vehicle, and that it
    is just as shoddy in construction.   Only the reputation of Defiance Industries has kept
    most Steiner commanders from disregarding the ?Mech, and the heavy protection has meant that
    those commanders have grown to rely on it.
    For those times when a Von Paulus needs to pull back to resupply, it mounts a pair of
    Defiance medium lasers, with one facing rearward.   While this is hardly sufficient
    firepower for any purpose save defensive, the ?Mech relies more on its autocannon.

Deployment:
    Because the Von Paulus is such a relatively new design, it is almost unknown outside of the
    LAAF and uncommon even within it.   The Von Paulus so far has been concentrated in Lyran
    defensive units protecting high-value locations and targets such as military centers and
    industrial centers.   The manufacturing of the ?Mech has not been made the highest priority
    for Defiance Industries, but it is important enough that it is thought that a majority of
    Lyran defensive units will be primarily composed of Von Pauluses in less than 10 years,
    along with similar units such as Hatchetmen.
