Overview:
Watakushi is a joint project among Luthien Armor Works and several lesser local
manufacturers that stemmed from DCMS call for a relatively simple medium-to-short range
brawler to supplement it's more sophisticated machines and a noted fact that Luthien orbital
foundries were able to produce more endo-steel parts than was the actual demand at the
moment. This situation was planned to be remedied in two or three years by expanding current
production lines and further spreading of the upgrade kits for older machines in Draconis
serve, but until then the central coordination directive was to use the endo-steel skeletons
to assemble new machines rather than to stockpile the parts for later use. The fact that LAW
provides only MRMs, ER laser and some gyroscope parts with basic skeleton parts, that are
mostly intended for various other LAW heavy machine, and outsources the documentation to
local manufacturers to arrange their own supply of other materials required for construction
means that there is a lot of internal difference among Watakushi, but all share the basic
look that is often compared to a cross between short-snouted Dragon and clan Scylla.

Capabilities:
Named after heavy, broad-headed arrows used by ancient samurai of Terra to cause horrid
wounds to enemy horses and unprotected warriors alike, the Watakushi stands up to it's name
with thee ability to devastate lightly armoured targets in short amounts of time. Twin
Shigunga MRM-20 launchers can quickly strip armour from anything unwary enough to present
itself as a good target, although the ammunition supply is merely adequate to carry the
'Mech through the battle. Baking the missiles are a quartet of medium lasers and an ER large
lasers to provide both backup in case that all ammunition is depleted and broader coverage
of several engagement ranges. This weapon suite along with generous amount of standard
armour plating and added mobility from jump jets is believed to be sufficient to allow the
Watakushi to withstand enemy fire while it rushes to engagement range of it's missiles and
to keep it in there for some time to provide targeting data for its's lancemates while it
moves into enemy formation in an attempt to break it. Watakushi is a solid mech overall, but
it must be handled with care, because it easily overwhelms it'sheat dissipation system if
all weapons are used at once.

Deployment:
Most Watakushi sets are sent to reinforce units protecting borders with Ghost Bear territory
to give the 'Mech a test by fire aginst opponents that are often more mobile and better
armed. The Watakushi has performed admirably so far, provided that the terrain can be used
to it's advantage. Attempts to fight the Bears on their own terms were not even considered.
High praises were sung upon the ability to withstand terrible punishment and stay
operational, but otherwise there couldn't be much more to praise for the Bears have quickly
learnt to stay out of the way with units like Vulture, that are often disadvantaged and move
in with Thors and Gladiators, that easily turn the tabs on Watakushi in it's own game. The
change of tactics however suggests that clan warriors clearly recognized the threat
presented by the new machine. Currently the central command is considering the possibility
to keep the Watakushi in production even after 3070 as a supplement and/or replacement for
Grasshoppers currently serving within the DCMS, but the plan will be evaluated after the
    testing period end in 3065.

Variants:
The sheer amount of asembly facilites, three on Bear border alone, warants high amount of
variability among locla products. Officially however only two variants exist. The WTK-3K is
the original prototype that lacks the large laser, one of the medium lasers and packs twin
MRM-30s instead. This variant was phased out due to constant actuator problems that plagued
the overstressed arms. WTK-6K experimentally removes the large laser and one of the medium
lasers to install light PPCs to every side torso backed by one of the medium lasers,
creating more symethric equipment distribution. There are rumors about installation of a
heavier PPC-type weapon underway at LAW, but these are unconfirmed so far.
