Overview:
Never a popular design, the Scorpion was one of the two known quad designs arising from the
Star League era. Besides the flaws discovered in the basic premise of the quad
'Mech--notably the lack of being able to 'twist' the torso and relatively scareity of
critical slots--the Scorpion was under-sinked, under-armored, and rather fast for its mass.
The SLDF Royal 'Mech upgrade program took this opportunity to correct--most--of these
    faults.

Capabilities:
Retaining the 330-rate engine that allowed this 'Mech to move at speeds approaching 100
kilometers-per-hour, the engineers replaced the standard structure with Endo-Steel and
upgraded all then single heats sinks to doubles. At the same time, they removed all weapon
systems from the 'Mech and stripped the armor from the chassis. 10.5 tons of Ferro-fibrous
armor replaced the 7 tons of standard armor of the original design--a modification that
significantly increased overall armor protection and survivability.
Replacing the PPC was an Extended Range Large Laser mounted in the center torso. Though
this weapon reduced the damage value by 20% compared to the PPC, it had a longer range and
reduced weight. The old-style SRM-6 drum launcher was also removed, to be replaced with a
pair of Streak SRM-2 launchers--one per torso--covered with a thick shell of armor. When
the MechWarrior locks these weapons onto a target, two armored doors covering each launcher
open, and then close again after the missiles are fired. This system made the new Scorpion
look more streamlined and protected the vulnerable missile launch tubes from accidental
damage. A single ton of SRM ammo was stored in a compartment just behind the cockpit, with
ammuntion transfer systems leading to both launchers.
CASE was not fitted to the design, since the ammuntion was already stored in the head. The
engineers felt that given its position, if the ammo was detonated, then the Mech was already
lost. Finally, a small pulse laser was fitted into the right torso for anti-personnel work.
The engineers also completely reworked the leg assemblies, using the latest developments in
actuator systems. While these systems consumed no space or weight, they did lower the
roughness of the Scorpion IIs gait to acceptable levels (one of the major complaints about
the original was that even a short journey battered the MechWarrior to near uselessness). A
redesigned cockpit wtih an all-angle shock absorbtion system negated what little battering
remained. SLDF MechWarriors seemed more impressed by that simple refit than the all of the
    rest.

Deployment:
Only a few hundred Scorpion IIs were produced for the SLDF before the Amaris Crisis and the
Exodus. These 'Mechs were assigned to Light Horse, Hussar, and Striker regiments
exclusively. Over one hundred survived the wars and are believed to have departed the Inner
Sphere during Kerensky's Exodus, certainly none remained in the service of any of the Great
    Houses.
