Overview:
One of the first and most loved of the Hegemony 'Mechs, the Griffin was a prime cantidate
for the Royal 'Mech upgrade program. SLDF Engineers selected this machine for mass
production in 2754, with over 3500 produced before the Amaris Coup. Fast, maneuverable, and
deadly, the Griffin II was one of the symbols of the power of the Star League.

Capabilities:
Engineers replaced the standard structure and armor with Endo-Steel and 9.5 tons of
Ferro-Fibrous armor. This not only freed up 2.5 tons of weight, but also increased the
already heavy armor protection of the design. They also removed the 12 single heat sinks,
replacing them with 11 double-strength units.
The simple and reliable Fusigun PPC was replaced with one of the brand new Tiegart Magnum
Extended Range PPCs. This weapon featured a range increase of almost 28% and lacked the
feedback potential that prevented standard PPCs from being used accurately at minimum range.
The old style Delta Dart LRM-10 launcher and ammo was replaced with a newer, larger,
Mitchell Systems LRM-15 launcher with an Artemis IV Fire-Control System. Two tons of ammo
were provided, both encapsulated in CASE for yet more protection against damage.
Despite the new systems, speed and jump capacity remained the same as on the original model.
SLDF MechWarriors assigned to the Royal formations were extremely pleased with the new
    upgrade to this 'Mech.

Deployment:
With more than 3,500 produced in less than 12 years, few Royal formations lacked this 'Mech.
Unfortunately for the SLDF, Rim Worlds forces captured almost 500 of these machines
awaiting shipment to the SLDF in the Periphery upon taking Terra. Stefan Amaris kept the
Griffin II factories up and running during the occupation as well, adding yet more of these
war machines to his own troops. Despite sabotage of the production lines on four
occassions, when Kerensky landed on Terra, no fewer than 1,400 Griffin IIs were among those
'Mechs waiting for him, over half of those assigned to the defense of North America. In the
broken terrain of Alaska and the Pacific Northwest, the hard-hitting, tough Griffin II
served both sides well during the grinding advance of the SLDF upon Unity City.

Variants:
The only variant was one introduced by the Rim Worlds forces on Terra, replacing the LRM-15
launcher and ammo with two SRM-4 launchers, each with a ton of ammo and Artemis IV FCS.
These models also added a small pulse laser for anti-personnel work. Sixty-five 'Mechs of
this variant were captured intact by the SLDF and departed on the Exodus--none remained in
the Inner Sphere after Kerensky's departure.

Notable MechWarriors:
The most dangerous position in any planetary assault wave is that of pathfinder. These
highly trained men and women are the first on the ground, setting beacons to guide the other
troops down. During the campaign against Amaris, one of the pathfinder Battalions was the
501st Royal Striker Battalion. Comprised soley of 36 Griffin IIs, the 501st hit the ground
first on twenty-three planets, including Terra. Throughout the campaign, they took a total
of 182 casulaties--but volunteers came forward to replace the fallen after each mission. A
unit of heroes within an army of heroes, the men and women of the 501st defied death time
and time again, cutting a hole where followup troops could safely land. Among the most
decorated units of the SLDF, the 501st dropped for the 24th and final time during the Mexico
City landings. Despite 5-1 odds against them, they secured the landing zone and held the
perimeter until the first wave of three BattleMech divisions relieved them. Of the 36 men
and women dropped that day, only seven survived, but they held, and in holding the line,
broke the back of the Rim Worlds VII Corps. General Kerensky himself decorated the entire
unit for their uncommon bravery and heroism. All seven survivors of the 501st departed in
    the Exodus.
