Overview:
One of the Lyran Alliances finer light mech designs, inspired by one of the most notable
mercenaries and a staunch supporter of the Lyran nation, the Wolfhound after upgrading in
3062 was rapidly losing popularity with its pilots. Barely 6 months after the initial
shipments had been made, over 79% of pilots that had received them had submitted requests
for different mech assignments or return of their WLF-2 Wolfhounds. An investigation by the
Lyran High Command revealed that the supposed 'improvements" implemented in the WLF-3S had
few proponents among the mechwarriors that had received them. Due to the increased demand
upon the heat sinks, even with an increase in the number installed, the increase in heat
generated by the new weapons prevented adequate use of the greater range and firepower that
had been envisioned by the R&D team that had sold the Quartermaster corps upon the
    concept.

Capabilities:
In virtually all cases, warriors assigned the new WLF-3S, were suffering greater damage than
had previously been seen among the WLF-2 machines. Mech-warriors were spending exorbitant
amounts of time hounding the technicians that maintained their mechs, to repair the damage
by substituting the newer weapons with those that had been on their Wolfhound 2 designs.
This proved to be impossible since the allowance for repair parts had been altered for the
attached units when the new machines had been shipped. The original parts were simply not
available for the technicians to substitute among those available in the stores, unless they
had been salvaged during combat. The technicians in response to the warriors requests
submitted the proper paperwork, especially after constantly being hounded about the status
of returning the beloved weapons layout of the WLF-2. This is what instigated the
investigation by the High command, and resulted in the redesign of the Wolfhound for the 3rd
time in its brief history, only 2 .5 years after the last "upgrade".

The new weapons configuration is remarkably similar to the original WLF-2. Returning to the
Extended Range Large Laser mounted on the right arm, and downgrading the Extended range
medium lasers to the original Defiance B3M models is where the similarities to the WLF-2
end. The infrequently used rear firing medium laser was removed and, in addition to the
Light Fusion engine and endo steel internal structure that had been used on the 3S, the
redesign team kept only one of the two freezers that had been installed. This change in
mass allowed for the new addition of a Guardian ECM suite and an advanced Targeting
computer; greatly enhancing the accuracy of the "old" weapons and providing greater
protection from advanced electronics increasingly found on the present day battlefield.

Deployment:
The new models are being shipped to replace the 3S upgrade as quickly as they are coming off
of the production lines. Initial reports are favorable. The enhanced capabilities are
reducing damage sustained by the units in combat, and the greater accuracy from the
targeting system change is resulting in higher kill ratios with the pilots. The increased
popularity is being seen by technicians, pilots, and unit commanders everywhere. There has
been an increase in demand from regimental commanders for the new WLF-4S and it looks as
though it will last for some time before an "upgrade" is considered.
