    These photographs were taken by a Kuritan agent at the NAIS; One of our agents on Luthien
    managed to copy them and get them to Tharkad via ComStar. Although grainy, the photographs
    clearly show a Fafnir, armed not with Heavy Gauss Rifles, but with Rotary Autocannon. Close
    analysis of the photos suggests that this is not a jury-rigged modification for weapons
    testing; indeed, from what little information we have, this seems to be a solid
    modification, and fully combat worthy. One junior analyst believes he has discovered several
    minor physical differences between this machine, presently designated FNR-1D, and the normal
    Fafnir produced by DefHes. If this is true, it could indicate that this machine was produced
    entirely outside the Alliance, a most disturbing development.

Capabilities:
    Although our data is limited, simulations predict that this BattleMech may have several
    advantages over the standard Fafnir. Primary among these is flexibility. The variable rate
    capabilities of the Rotary Autocannon system allow the pilot to use short bursts against
    lighter targets, and longer bursts against heavier targets. Also, the four autocannon
    combined can inflict significantly more damage than a pair of heavy gauss rifles.
    
    The use of four mid-size weapons instead of two large ones also makes this BattleMech much
    less likely to lose large amounts of firepower to damage. The head mounted medium pulse
    laser seems to have been removed in favor of a lighter ER weapon. Our best estimates give
    this 'Mech no more than 30 rounds per weapon, a low number for the Rotary Autocannon.
    However, by the time the 'Mech depletes its ammunition, it will most likely have caused
    significant damage. The only major disadvantage we see is the lack of spare mass for CASE
    equipment. Although we know of no way to mount CASE equipment in the arms or legs of a
    'Mech, we should not assume that the NAIS is equally unknowledgeable.
    
    

Deployment:
    We know of no instances in which this 'Mech has been deployed, but that may change,
    especially if this machine was truly produced within the Federated Suns. It is my belief
    that we must make the Archon aware of this situation as soon as possible. Although it is not
    within the purview of this report, I must register my concern with the possible
    ramifications of what can only have been an unfriendly intelligence operation executed
    against us by MIIO.
