Overview:
    Named after the prominent 5th century BC Athenian statesman and orator, the Pericles was
    commissioned by the SLDF in 2698, but was soon superseeded by more technologically advanced
    Battlemech designs, such as the Highlander, and was relegated to second-line regiments
    within the SLDF.  A small number were also sold to the private armies Houses Davion,
    Steiner, and Marik.  After the coup of Stefan Amaris, General Aleksandr Kerensky threw the
    entire weight of the SLDF into the civil war which ensued, wherein the Pericles gave
    exemplary service as a shock trooper.

Capabilities:
    The Pericles was designed in accord with a Quartermaster order calling for "an assault
    battlemech capable of reducing the strongest enemy positions."  The success of the Pericles
    on the battlefield begins with it's heavy armor and heat sink systems, giving the 'mech
    extraordinary staying power in the field.  An LRM-20 allows the Pericles to lay down a heavy
    missile barrage before closing with the enemy, and an unprecedented three Large Lasers
    provide the knock-out punch.  Although the LRM system carries only a limited supply of
    missiles, the remainder of the weapons system are not dependent on ammunition, making the
    Pericles capable of staying in the field longer than most assault 'mechs.

Deployment:
    The Pericles is a rare design today.  The vast majority attached to the SLDF were either
    destroyed in the civil war or disappeared with the Exodus.  The Wolf's Dragoons field three
    Pericles, and a few also remain in service with Houses Steiner and Marik, where they
    continue to serve as shock troops on the battlefields of the Succession Wars.
