    In the years following the discovery and distribution of the famous Gray-Death-Memory-Core
    and its data, a wave of re-engineered high tech items swept over the Inner Sphere. As soon
    as the new equipment was available plans were made to incorporate them into Alshains
    When Kuritan scientists "reinvented" the ER-PPC and the pulse lasers first in 3037, both
    types of weapons were considered for a possible upgrade of the designs in production. While
    the medium pulse laser had been found too heavy the ER-PPC was built into both the
    Panther-10K and the Leopard -1C.
    It didn't take long for the DCMS to notice, that this weapon overtaxed the heat dissipation
    system of both Mechs easily. The new PPC's had to be stripped from the machines and the
    older standard versions were refitted again, creating a huge stockpile of ER-PPC's.
    Later this was called the "Panther upgrade debacle".
    With the first ferro fibrous armor reaching Alshain  a second "high tech variant", the
    LPD-2A, went in production. Still carrying the standard PPC this Mech featured full
    potential armor coverage.
    But it wasn't until the Combine's scientists finally accomplished what their Davion
    "colleagues" did first: re-engineering the Star League double heat sink, that Alshain could
    do a decent upgrade to the Leopard in 3045.

    The LPD-2D's new heat dissipation system not only delivered a fantastic 54% rise in
    Performance but also weighed 23% less than its predecessor. This freed up enough tonnage to
    do a decent weapons upgrade.
    The new heat sinks enabled the Mech to carry the Lord's Light 2 ER-PPC without the
    overheating problems of the LPD-1C. The old Imperator A auto-cannon was dropped in favor of
    the new Imperator Ultra with double the ammunition to counter the high consumption.
    Last but not least a Victory Heartbeat pulse laser replaced the old 23R.
    In combination with the ferro fibrous armor of the LPD-2A the new weapons made the Leopard
    much more dangerous and so it managed to retake some of the long lost killer image.

    The upgraded variants were sent to units along the Federated Commonwealth border. The LPD-1C
    and -2A as fire-support units and the LPD-2D in medium combat lances too.

    Besides the early -1C and -2A no further variant were built.
    Plans to incorporate an EndoSteel skeleton into the design, to gain enough tonnage to fit an
    LB10-X and a CASE in, came to a sudden end when Clan Ghost Bear attacked Alshain and the
    retreating Combine troops demolished most of the local industry to prevent it from falling
    into the enemies hands.
    So far no other factory was retooled to produce the Leopard.
