Description: Colonel Felix Blucher`s orders from the Archon were simple enough: quash the Davion Loyalist uprising on Thorin. But Blucher never planned on facing the fearless Archer Christifori, local militia leader and decorated MechWarrior in the Clan Wars.

As tensions rise between Blucher`s Lyran Alliance and the Davion Loyalist population, Archer is torn between obedience to the Archon or allegiance to his people. But when Blucher`s forces go too far, Archer takes up the Loyalist cause and becomes commander of the rebel army. The final confrontation looms and the rebels face long odds—but it takes more than `Mechs to win Thorin`s freedom. It takes a hero...

Comment: My all-time favorite Battletech novel. It introduced my favorite Battletech character and showed a good view of how the war started from the common people's perspective. The only minor probelm is that it should have been harder for Fisk to get the security personal to join his bomb plot . The odds of no one he approached informing Colonel Blucher of his plans are very low and Fisk has to know that if he gets caught he'll be dead before his daddy can run to Kathrine for help.

Comment: The Christifori books are easily the most interesting books dealing with the FedCom Civil War, and Pardoe is one of the better authors BTech has. Like Exodus Road, this one combines combat with a human character, someone far down in the chain (as opposed to the unending focus on Katherine and Victor.) All the characters are pretty believeable; they have emotions, goals, and everything like that. Here we get to see how Katherine's corruption is seen/discovered by normal people, people who would otherwise be following her orders. It's also nice to see a simple battalion on battalion battle, as opposed to the huge multi-regimental things which Coleman does exclusively. The combat scenes are very good, and they manage to incorporate very well into the story; unlike in some other books, the plot manages to advance both in and out of combat. The fights are both interesting in their originality and believable in their execution and results. Overall, an excellent book.

Comment: This book illustrates the beginning of the Fed Com civil war if I may be so bold in that statement. You see how the overall political situation is deteriorating all over the Fed Com but in particular on Thorin.

One of the major characters is a noble’s son. This kid’s arrogance basically starred the rebellion on Thorin. But also you see how such power back in the royal courts is become tainted.

In the book are some significant political events that occur outside the main story line. I would like to read more about these events but I have yet to read the novel that details them. (Also I think I am out of order this reading this book.)

Some battles at the end seem far fetched. How did that company take out a whole battalion? And of course these are in parts of the story where little is written. Oh well, a decent read anyhow.
