So what if the WoB never actually ran off when the Jihad ended, say they were adsorbed by Stone's Republic and then said same Republic orders the Blackout...thoughts? I mean it could be a crazy idea but then again this is Battletech...

I'm off in my own verse that prevents the Dark Age junk from happening, and so it doesn't bother me anyway.

While I dislike the whats and whys.... the writers have done an amazing job making it palatable. Its now not all that unreasonable when taken as a whole.

Well Vagabond I think you and I will disagree on this one, I don't see the whole Jihad/WoB plot as any where as palatable. So for some of us there are too many holes, too many unanswered questions and too much ego and "how dare you question" line of thinking tossed into things.

A good story or plot can handle what ifs or could have beens and still stand on it's own. Star Wars has tons of what if this happen or that happen or how could the Empire be so crazy as to etc...same with Star Trek and other classics. YET they aren't falling apart from the fans asking questions or pointing out issues or errors or commenting good or bad about the story or plot. But when it comes to Battletech, it seems that if one isn't praising things and saying how great it is on all sides of the box well then we have the ego and attitude and the snide remarks tossed in and folks getting up set.

The idea here is to see if folks are paying attention, the WoB just vanishes after the Jihad, no major war crime trials, nothing to really show that the armies under Stone won, nothing really to settle things down and give purpose to his new vision of "Peace in our Times". Yet poof we get it. SO the question comes up what happen to the WoB, the official line aka the party line is they ran off for some of the Hidden Worlds thus are around to be the boggie man as needed. Noting here that this wasn't done with Amaris and his forces, nope they were beaten and slaughtered for the most part. But would it not be logical for a good number of the lesser units and even some of the elite units and personnel to join the ROTS (wow this sounds so close to Star Wars and the REVENGE OF THE SITH acronym that is used by LFL (Disney)) and thus avoid being punished?

Also who gains from the Blackout? The Republic would seem to not be gaining but are they really hurting? If Stone ordered the Blackout or at least a faction in the Republics higher levels acting on their own or via a plan put in place by say an agreement with ComStar and Stone that at XX time period turn things off and see what happens. Then this could be a grand way to reshape the playing field yet again since many things didn't happen as the Powers that Be in the higher circles of power wanted them too. Yes certain things changed but instead of stable power blocks, you have chaos and that doesn't help things. So yes it could be a crazy idea or even on target, but this is the Battletech universe and we are dealing with things that are not normal, like the Lyrans willing help the Wolves move from their holdings to former Marik space or how all of a sudden folks will willing lay down their weapons and join in trade agreements and for go having large militaries etc...again this is Battletech thus anything is possible...

Personally I haven't paid much attention to happenings in the sphere lately besides TROs, but what I have seen the current state at least starts to resemble acceptable BT for me. How it got to this state may be another matter. I think that saying that Blakists deleted whole thing from historical registers and starting anew could still be a solution.

Do I like the state of BT post-jihad? no.

Is the state of BT as bad as it was when Dark Ages came out? no.

The writers do appear to at least be trying to fill in the holes and answer the unknowns. I frankly feel sorry for them. They got saddled with a lot of shit that had no explanation other than 'because we need it for our new game'.

An example you point out is the sudden disarmament and old enemies helping each other move across the entire sphere. The DA people wanted to reform the game map while using old faction roots. Then we got BT back, and now the writers are having to direct everything to reach that established canon. Its a lot like them releasing the SL Historical book. We know most of what happened but not everything. Its hard for them to fill in the holes. The Jihad and DA fucked things up bad and they gotta fix it while being forced to comply with certain fix point events.

I can swallow more of the Jihad stuff now that they've put some writers towards it. Does it taste good, no. Can I swallow, yes.

As for WoB, maybe they have decided upon some deceptive sithish reason. Maybe WoB isn't gone but got covertly absorbed. Maybe the RotS was WoB plan B.

Just as likely, the writers know how unpopular the Jihad is and have just decided to quietly tuck WoB away in the same folder as LAMs. They existed, but are effectively gone.

Fair enough, now your comment about Plan B being the ROTS, I could see that given that they did like the complex plans that need a lot of things to happen at once etc...So the Blackout could be their finial ace card come to play.

I am right there with you....

I find the whole blackout idea very un-palatable. Seems like something that wasn't well thought out. As already mentioned, who benefits and what's the point.

Also, after hundreds of years in space and using HPG stations, I am getting tired of no one understanding how they work. And after all that Comstar and WOB has pulled on the rest of the IS, who would let them in their nation state and run their interstellar communications. It is completely ridiculous. This would be like the US putting some 3rd party terrorist organization in charge of intelligence gathering

I have it that a faction I created bribed, cajoled, and/or intimidated the local Comstar folks into showing them how the HPGs work, the result being that the faction not only knows how to work them but is actually producing and stockpiling "spare" pre-fab HPGs at a rate of one per year.

This is in addition to several top field agents having their own portable "miniature" HPGs (comparable to the mini-HPG that a Cappellan spy used during the Fourth Succession War; it was small enough to where it was built into a prosthetic limb, but powerful enough to reach the next planet over), allowing them to communicate with people elsewhere.

I don't think those who originated the Blackout idea had a plan for how it would end. It seems very random and I don't think Catalyst knows how to explain this.

It will likely be pieced together in a way that doesn't make any sense. Like WOB putting together a large enough army to take on the IS and Clans without anyone noticing

Which doesn't make the explanation any better...

I still think things were set in motion for a Plan C kind of thing by WoB or a faction working with in that group and given that the WoB managed to go down fighting but not taken out totally and then keeps showing back up stopping folks from digging up old ruins or setting up new colonies etc...yeah seems that the biggest threat to mankind isn't big on the list to take down by ROTS (really which they would have chosen a better name too Star War-ish).
