I think there is no need to change & simplify Claasic BattleTech any longer.
If you need a simple game for beginners just play MechWarrior: Dark Age with them, which will be released 7 August'02.
After they are hooked, teach them the more complex rules of CBT.
If you need a more accurate Conflict Simulation then you should use one of the many good CoSim's instead of CBT as it is well known that FASA-Physics stink and that FASA has damaged CBT beyound repair.

P.S.: Creating too many modified rules leads only to a scenario where EVERYBODY plays with totaly differnt houserules and splits the dwindling numbers of CBT-players even more
