Overview:
Based upon the SLDF Scorpion design, the Boreal Wildcat is a 55-ton medium
BattleMech that uses a quad--rather than biped--motive system. Originally
designed and developed by the Hell's Horses, who wanted to perfect the stable
four-legged platform to complement their tanks, the Boreal Wildcat proved to be
wildly unpopular among that Clan. However, when the Hellions first discovered
its speed and firepower, they quickly issued a batchall and secured exclusive
production rights. They modified the design by adding MASC, increasing the
speed still further. One area where the Horses and Hellions did manage to
succeed was in the run-by-wire computer system that controlled the leg
movement--in comparison the original Scorpion, the design was smooth handling
and agile. Clan control computers also allow Warriors assigned to this beast to
use the characteristic side-to-side crawl of the original Scorpion.


Capabilities:
As a quad, the Boreal Wildcat is nearly unique among the Clans. A capable
design, it is often criticized at emphasizing speed over firepower--but the
lack of internal space may have been one factor in the decision to boost engine
power. A 385-rate extra-light fusion engine gives this Mech a speed of 75.6
kilometers per hour (walking) and 118.8 kph (running), while the MASC system
boosts speeds to 151.2 kph for limited periods of time. Despite the confining
nature of a quads design on internal volume, the Horses (and the Hellions)
utilize endo-steel internal structure in the skeletal construction and provided
the Boreal Wildcat with ten and a half tons of ferro-fibrous armor--more than
many Heavy weight BattleMechs!

Armament consists of an ER PPC in the center torso, supported at close range by
a Streak SRM-6 launcher (15 shots) in the right torso. With a spare ton
available, the Hellions then added an ER Small Laser to the head. Ten
double-strength heat sinks come standard, but are not quite enough to deal with
the generated heat if all weapons are fired and the Wildcat conducts a full
run. The excess overheat is minimal, however, and easily within the range that
a Warrior is expected to deal with.


Deployment:
Although several Clans possess one or two examples of the Boreal Wildcat, the
vast majority belong to the Ice Hellion toumen. Existing Horse units were sold
off, mainly due to the Warriors of that Clan disliking that the BattleMech was
unable to twist its torso. Among the Hellions, the Boreal Wildcat is
extensively used as a fire support unit, providing heavy PPC fire at long
range, while using its side-ways crawl to keep the target centered in its
sights.

The only other Clan to use the Boreal Wildcat in any numbers is Clan Goliath
Scorpion, who acquired the rights to produce this BattleMech in 3043.  Since
the design is based on the SLDF namesake of their totem, the Clan's Warriors
consider it a great honor to be assigned to one.


Variants:
The Boreal Wildcat Mk LX Mod GS used by the Goliath Scorpions removes the MASC
to install a two-ton targeting computer.  The Streak SRM-6 and ER Small Laser
are also replaced with an Anti-Missile System (head, with 24 shots in the right
torso), two ER Medium Lasers (right and left torso), and one more double heat
sink.

Overview:
The Stormcrow is the linear descendant of the SLDF Griffin. Designed as a
moderately fast, heavily armed and armored BattleMech able to support both
lighter and heavier units, the Stormcrow excels at warfare. The simple design
has been adopted and today this BattleMech is in production by not only the
Snow Ravens, but the Diamond Sharks, Jade Falcons, and Nova Cats.


Capabilities:
Massing 55 tons, the Stormcrow uses a 330-rate extra-light fusion engine to
move at a walking speed of 64.8 kilometers per hour and a running speed of 97.2
kph. Six jump jets allow for jump distances of up to 180 meters, while
endo-steel internal structure and nine and a half tons of ferro-fibrous provide
plenty of spare tonnage for the weapon systems.

The main gun is an ER PPC mounted in the right arm, which is also equipped with
a fully functional hand actuator. Fifty percent more powerful than the SLDF
model installed on the original Griffin, the Clan ER PPC also has a longer
range. In place of the LRM-10 launcher the Griffin carried, the Stormcrow
instead mounts an LRM-20 launcher with Artemis IV. Three tons of ammunition
gives this BattleMech a total of eighteen salvoes. Although the Clan weapons do
not possess a minimum range, the Raven designers wanted to include a light
antipersonnel battery and added two AP Gauss Rifles to the left arm (20 shots
each).

Thirteen double heat sinks are fitted to the design, which is sufficient to run
and gun with all weapons without generating any excess overheat. In fact, the
Stormcrow can jump up to 150 meters and fire the ER PPC and LRMs while
remaining heat neutral. Only if all weapons are fired and the jumps in use is
any excess overheat generated.


Deployment:
One of the most commonly encountered Clan medium-weight BattleMechs currently
in service (contending with the Golden Lion for that title), the Stormcrow
remains in production with four Clans to this very day. Produced by the Shark,
Falcons, Cats, and Ravens, it is seen in every Clan toumen.


Variants:
Despite the abundance of Stormcrows across Clan space, the basic design has
remained unaltered for decades. Only the Nova Cats have a variant. This model
(Mod NC) reduces the LRM-20 to an LRM-15 and cuts the armor by a half ton in
order to mount a two ton targeting computer in the right torso. Stormcrow Mk LV
Mod NC are only rarely encountered outside of the Nova Cat, Goliath Scorpion,
and Wolf toumens.

One thing I did forget to mention earlier: by the rules as written, Elementals can't ride standard BattleMechs as mechanized battle-armored infantry. Well, since this AU has no OmniMechs, I have made that ability apply to all Clan 'Mechs, omni or not. So yes, Virginia, Elementals can still ride into battle atop their Star or Nova mates.

I like FASA's prime config of the their Stormcrow, nothing I saw really provides that.

True, this Stormcrow is more of a Griffin derived 'Mech than the canon model--which was a lot like a faster Mad Dog with the twin ER Larges and twin ER Mediums. Which is one reason I didn't just recreate it.

The original Stormcrow was nothing like the original Mad Dog. Dual ER LLs and triple ER MLs with the double freezers to fire everything while running full out. Mad Dog had lasers but not the freezers plus the missiles to heat her up even more.

I still remember the first time I saw the Stormcrow in action, took out a cocky Warhammer that thought a 55 tonner would fall flat to his double PPCs and kept going to ruin the better part of the 'Hammer's lance.

Makes sense the Jags would retool. They always were tunnel vision types, I hope the Vipers can really stick in their craw for awhile.

Odd that neither the Jags or Cats produce the Shadow Cat.
