Hi guys! 3 years ago, I posted a thread that collected my submitted designs.

I usually only play canon designs, so I am not much of a designer. But I had decided to share some of the few designs that I wrote over the years.

Usually, I need to have an interesting idea to make it worth my time submitting these and writing something up. Most of the time, I feel that the official designs fully suffice for my every needs!

Since I've returned to frequent the boards more regularly, I thought I might resurrect this as well. Unfortunately, all the old links are broken, which is why I think it may be nice to have a redux thread. I will update this should I post more designs.

As it is, we now have so many customs, that individual designs get lost far too easily. Regulars, I would appreciate it if you would consider creating similar threads of your own...

I will present only the links and a short OOC synopsis.


Blackjack IIC

One of my first designs ever, this was an exercise to get 6 headcappers on a (somewhat) functional chassis. It was originally named JagerMech IIC until I discovered that MechForce UK had already been there and done that. That is why I had to conjure up a Blackjack story, something a lot of viewers did not like at all.

Blackjack IIC 2

The base model was done by me in the mid 90s, when I was a noob. After I'd entered it here, I discovered that when taking Endo Steel instead of an XL, I could actually mount more armour and had a much tougher 'Mech. As the base model was already entered, this became the "2", but I'd actually call this the production model.

My first effort ever to pod an Omni, this was done after I'd only had one or two BT games under my belt. Call it munchy, it just seemed to make a lot of sense to this noob.

Sometimes as you look through your TROs, you catch yourself saying: "Why didn't they do it that way?" This was one of these times, much more recently. Yes, I realise I got the hyphen in the designation mixed up... Embarassed


Atlas AS7-M

Not designed to be good in any way. When I was getting to know AT2, I was intrigued with some of the suboptimal fighter load-outs. That led me to come up with this, serving to feed my addiction to ACs. Yes, it is inefficient as all hell, but I thought that a simple, quick-n-dirty upgrade package would not go through the trouble of removing all those redundant HS. Did you pick up the reference to an early BattleTechnology story?
And yes, I seem to be rather bad with my hyphens. Embarassed , again


Minihammer MHM-35R

When I first posted the above assaults, I caught a lot of flak because I was considered a munchkin (me? gah!). I did this one in 15 minutes - 5 minutes for the design, 10 minutes for the write-up. I wanted to demonstrate that anyone could cobble together a half-decent, non-optimised design but that it would be bland. What feedback do I get? A positive one! Rolling Eyes I guess we are too used to fluff-less designs...


Minimax MNX-10F

As above, wash, rinse, repeat. I guess there were still ideas behind them. The above was to recreate a Warhammer-lite, this one was to create a heavy scout using that same excellent engine. The above at least started with a design concept, this merely had a concept of efficiency (can you tell that by looking at its name?! Laughing ). As I said, no more than 15 minutes.... Though I don't consider these *bad*, these two are definitely the least involved (and involving?) of my designs.


Kronos K-RO-X3N

Now we hit some *real* designs by yours truly. I spent a lot of time on the Kronos. I was trying to find an ideal blend of perfect heat management on a triple-strength myomer 'Mech, yet have it be as tough as possible. I think I succeeded quite nicely in bringing this concept to life. However, as reviews (and, to my chargrin, playtests) showed me, a faithfully executed concept a good 'Mech does not make. It still has a warm place in my heart, but it is not the be-all-end-all that I envisaged.

Kronos K-RO-X2A

And a "prototype". I first tried going the route of the dual boomstick. Later, after finding my satisfactory solution with the -X3N, I revisited this as a limited production run for the open market. Yes, it has always been tournament legal to turn off heat sinks; yes, of course that UAC20 ammo is supposed to be standard AC20 ammo.


Rifleboy RBY-3N

The Clans have more tough, slow fire-support light 'Mechs than the IS. Yet I realised that at such low weights, the technology discrepancy would not make as huge a difference as on larger designs. Thus was born the Rifleboy.

To illustrate the point, here is the surprisingly similar (though undeniably superior) Clan equivalent.


Conceptmech CM-X1

Back in 2002, I played the only game ever where I actually used my own designs. It was lance-vs-lance, 255 tons (don't ask me why. Maybe it was 250 and I was just over by 5) and I'd already had the Kronos and a solid idea of the Rifleboy and Clankiller. I missed a low-end medium 'Mech. This was it, technically a 15-minute design itself, but proven in a trial of fire. It actually did very well, together with the Clankiller (the Kronos and Rifleboy were somewhat disappointing).


Clankiller CLK-5R

Last but definitely not least, here is the Clankiller. The name stemmed from its inception: a 'Mech that smartly uses the three weapon systems that were decent compared to their Clan equivalents: the LB10-X (only 1 ton heavier), the Gauss Rifle (3 tons heavier) with equal the performance and the standard ML, which remains in a league of its own until this very day. At first I suspected that the design may be somewhat haphazard; it performed brilliantly.

Clankiller CLK-C

As I revisited my designs, I thought this one warranted a C3-upgrade. Yes, since designing/posting the original, I have been smacked around by C3i Wobblies once too many times. This is an answer in kind. I used the opportunity to slightly redistribute the ammunition - basically the main point of criticism of the original.

Clankiller CLK-6S

And while I was digging up my old notes, I thought a LFE variant that could join the wide field of dual-Gauss toting assaults was in order. This one was a no-brainer, kind of obligatory. Tell me what you think.

Clankiller CLK-7R

This one I am more enthusiastic about. Yes, it misses its biggest gun, but it also utilises the full potential of advanced IS engine/gyro construction. This is no longer lvl3, by the way. It is now part of the Total Warfare tournament level rules.


Tribune (Armiger) Prime

As I was in the car for a long time the other day, I dreamed this one up. Hey, it's a primitive medium Clan Omni, it has its place. An Omni-Centurion, I had to rewrite it a bit upon remembering that the Centurion was a post-Exodus design. The Prime mirrors the Centurion in many details. I don't know what happened with the haywire formating.

Tribune (Armiger) A

A 1:1 infighting version; I would have liked a LPL in the CT, but I thought the inlcusion of jump jets was obligatory for this one.

Tribune (Armiger) B

I had actually dreamed of the Tribune being pimped out with TechManual and even Tactical Operations equipment. It was the inspiration to this design, that made me decide to make it an old, old Omni instead. The UAC5 is exactly the sort of stupid thing that FASA used to do. But don't forget: it still carries as many missiles as that old Longbow!

Tribune (Armiger) C

This munched-out configuration was the first one I'd definitely arrived at. It was pushed back into the "C" slot in parallel to the Warhawk C. Best for last? I actually think it is the most bland configuration (I am partial to the Prime and the flawed B), but hey, it could've.... Crap, I just realised that this could've served as a 1:1 inspiration for the Sun Cobra, but I missed the opportunity to submit that in the fluff... Evil or Very Mad

I do apologise for the suboptimal editing on the fluff of these.

I'd love to get your feedback, especially on the redux of the Clankiller (the Armiger was more of a one-off brainfart).

The ClanKiller reminds me of a bigger version of the Marauder

The Armiger has a small deficiency in short rang weapons...

Funny thing - I always envisioned the Clankiller as a Highlander with Emperor arms (and a BFG sticking out of its torso). It was only when I was creating these new variants for the TRO that I realised the same thing as you - essentially, this is a super-Marauder. Move over, Nightstar!

I don't see a problem in the Armiger's short-range defences - after all, Clan weapons eliminate most minimum ranges. And if your concerns aren't alleviated by that, you can always chose the Armiger A.

In truth, this was to have been a test-bed for a mixture of improved jump jets and modular armour. You know? Reinforced torsoso and arms, a jump of 6 (translating into 5 with the mod armour) and a couple of large pulse lasers. That would've been my ideal Prime.... but I decided to go for "old design" instead. I may still post one or two "recent" designs.
