Well, after looking at Sarna, I am pleased, however, that turned to horrified after a short web jaunt after that.

Other than my reprint editions of the Warrior trilogy by Stackpole, I don't have anything covering the time before 3055. Makes it AWFUL hard to try and run time periods before then, and might really account for my like of House Davion. They're the only ones I 'get'.

So, I look up 'The Sword and The Dagger', which tells a story I've heard about, and would like very much to read. Every book I found was both very expensive and incredibly worn. Not a very good sign.

Is there any hope that these works might make it to PDF form, or reprints? Right now, it seems like I'm in a hard place, if trying to go back and work my way forward through the timeline.

Do what I do: start cruising yard sales, book sales, and used book / item stores.

It'll take some time, effort, and patience, but if you're lucky you'll get what you need at a reasonable price.

I've had excellent luck at side street used book stores. At Argo's Used Books on Wealthy (Maybe it was Cherry, I forget but real close to that corner lol) in Grand Rapids, MI in particular. I got the first 5 books in Twilight of the Clans in ShelfWorn Near Mint (Never been read, but a lot of shelf wear showing) for $2.95 each. I got first editions of one of the older trilogies with minor wear for $4.70 for the set. Decision at Thunder Rift I picked up for $0.89 because the outer lower corner of the back cover was missing about half an inch lol, otherwise it was in near mint. 90% of my BT books came from that store. Too bad I no longer live there (3 hour drive away now).

As the others have implied: don't forget to look at the other pre-3050 novels: the 3 GDL books by W.H.Keith and the 2 pre-3050 books by Bob Charrette (Heir to the Dragon, Wolves on the Border). Most of these are actually excellent reads.

Apart from that, there is no off-chance that you're fairly fluid in German? In Germany, TS&TD is still in print...

Oh, I plan to grab them all. I was just thinking of starting with 'The Sword and The Dagger' because it's a story I've heard a lot about but don't know the details on. As for being fluent in German, perhaps when I retire. It's on my list of stuff to do before I take a gauss to the head.

Heir to the Dragon and Wolves on the Border are some of the very BEST in BT Novels. I loved 'em.

I would agree! They are definitely more multi-layered than some others...

Apart from that, my favourite authors are Milan (taking gritty in the BT universe to an extreme) and Thurston (best myth-building, ever). But err, I think that sidetracks the whole thread.

So yeah, CO_17thRecon - TS&TD is set before all the others (with the possible exception of the Decision on TR, which is a microscopic event not touching the grand politics of the Houses in any *major* way). It leads up to the Warrior Trilogy. Neverthess, it isn't worth the dozens and dozens of dollars. OTOH, I was quite fond of that book - don't believe all the haters out there, either. It is not worth getting polarised over, as seems to be happening with the CBT community.

It's a good book and all, but very OOP and not to be republished in any given time (major copyright issues, I believe), snatch it up if you chance upon it but don't sell a kidney for it.

I doubt these will ever be released as pdfs. Except for the Sword and the Dagger, the other five novels (the two Kurita novels and the three Grey Death novels) were reprinted.

The Sword and the Dagger and the Grey Death Legion novels are only tangentially tied into the Warrior Trilogy (i.e. The Sword and the Dagger explains Hanse's justification for attacking House Liao, and the last Grey Death novel explains how the Star League memory core was discovered.) The two Kurita novels are a bit more relevant.

The novel prices aren't actually all that bad. There is a Sword and the Dagger going for $20+shipping right now on ebay (it used to go for 3-4 times that amount). I was also able to find each of the other five books for less than $10 each with the "By it Now" option.

Good luck with these. They are still some of the best novels that was written. I just re-read my Heir to the Dragon, and was surprise at how much I had forgotten, and what a pleasure it was to read. (even though I am a Davion through and through.)
