Victory
Victory belongs not to the nation,
Nor to the King, Queen, or Lords.
Victory lies not with the common folk,
safe at home behind the lines.
Victory belongs to the brave men upon the field,
Those alive, those dead, those between.
Victory lies with the peasants whose homes are burned,
fields pillages, and women raped... yet who stand strong and proud.
Victory, intangible thing,
So precious, so fleeting.
Lasts not long,
For again the armies come.
Hark the rival Lords,
And the deeds done.
Victory springs forth anew,
and for a time peace reign again.
Yet in the end, another war always appears,
Will we ever know peace?
No, for it is the lack of Victory from strife,
That man truly fears.
Thus fail the Victors, for victory only war breeds.
