Here's my problem.

For my home system, I've got the wireless router for my mom's laptop hooked up into the main computer.

Earlier today, I lost the ability to access the internet from the main computer, and with it the ability to use wireless.

A friend of mine has managed to troubleshoot the wireless router into working again, meaning that I have wireless and that the connection to the wall outlet is still good.

However, I don't have net access from the main computer; the wireless router and my ethernet card aren't talking to each other. The tech support person for my ISP thinks that the ethernet card may be bad (the ISP addy reset itself to the factory default), and I've already checked it to make sure that it isn't loose.

Any ideas as to what I'm looking at? Do I need to get a new ethernet card, or is there something else that I can do?

Thanks.

So I'm assuming you have a wireless router in your house. You mother connects from her laptop via the wireless card and the main computer (desktop?) connects via a cable? The wireless connection is working from your mothers computer but your wired connection from the desktop is not?

Have you tried accessing the router from your desktop at 192.168.1.1?

If you can't access it, thehn there is a good probability the card is shot. If you can access it, then there is something else going on.

Actually the first thing you need to try is to disconnect the Ethernet cable from your computer. Now, disconnect the Ethernet cable from the modem to the router's internet port, from the router. Now connect that to your computer's Ethernet. Now, reset your modem (usually you have to unplug it for around 30 seconds). Once the modem finishes initializing, you should be able to access the internet. If you can, it is likely a bad Ethernet cable between the router and your computer, or a bad port on the router, or a failing router. First try moving the modem connection back to the router and unplug both. Wait 30 seconds, plug in the modem and let it init. Then plug in the router. Now reconnect your computer to the router, but use a different port on the router. Test. If it fails, test a different Ethernet cable. Test. If it still fails you've got a dead/dieing router, replace. Of course, if you still cannot access the internet with the modem connected directly to the computer, then yes you've probably got a bad Ethernet card. Very Happy

Didn't he say that he was able to connect wirelessly using the laptop? That would tell me that the router and modem are both fine. But you are correct, the port could be faulty on the router. I guess we all have different ways of trouble-shooting. Smile

Don't forget the simple faulty cable Very Happy
Thats the first thing I always try to eliminate. Of course, sometimes the cable jack just isn't seated properly into the outlet either Very Happy

SOOO Many things that could be wrong lol. I go from easy to hard.

And as for router, the router could still be puking out on the wired circuitry and work fine for wireless. I had it happen with an older D-Link a few years ago.

After some trouble-shooting, I've narrowed it down to the following:

1. I've got Norton's on the system as the anti-viral. One of my brothers (not Ronin) informed me that when he tried to reset his ISP, Norton's amped the firewall up to max and denied him access until such time as he re-set the firewall.

2. The ethernet card is bad. If so, I know someone who can get me a fairly new card for cheap.

You can eliminate Norton's from the equation quite simply by disabling it and seeing if that does anything.

That's what I'm going to do as soon as I get back from the library.

I'm going to make sure that Norton's doesn't have anything quarantened, then I'm going to uninstall it (both Ronin and my other brother have nothing good to say about it anyway).

If I get online, then I'll download Trend Micro and demand a refund from Norton's.

If I don't get online, then I know someone who works tech support and so can get me a good deal on some cards.

Don't uninstall, just turn it off. That way when you find out it's not the problem you only have to turn it back on again.

You won't get anything back from Symantec, so there's no need to waste your time. Do not spend a penny on any anti-virus.

Use this one:
free.grisoft.com/doc/2/

If there's anything you require that is in a pay product let me know and I'll post its free equivalent.

I was able to ping the motherboard, so that tells me it's probably not the card.

I'm going to poke around elsewhere and ask questions, then I'm going to Symantec's website itself.

I just uninstalled Norton's and it didn't do anything. I still can't get on.

You still haven't told me if you could connect to the router (192.168.1.1). It's possible there is a problem with the router, perhaps a firewall or something.

Now you know why I told you not to uninstall...I knew it wasn't the issue.

Not sure why Chi forgot to mention this, but just because you can ping your machine don't mean doodly. You can ALWAYS ping localhost, even if you don't have a network card installed. I would just replace the card at this point. Hell, I'd SEND you a card for $10 (mostly S&H) if I didn't already use up and/or sell all my spares lol!

You can get a brand new Linksys card at walmart for ~= $14 these days, and they are decent enough. I've put them in several systems and had the systems run constantly so far for 5 years 24/7. Not had a single one of those cheapo NICs die yet. 2 MOBOs, but they were SOYO and I'll never buy from them again. Of course, those machines aren't mine either, it was for a friend. I built him a small (9 machine) cluster for FAH, but the point remains, these things get constant use and have been going for 5 years, so you could quite easily live with one Very Happy

Of course, I prefer better brands and higher end gear for myself, but I do have 2 machines also with those cheapo cards. So, it won't hurt for you to test it, its cheap enough Smile

I know a guy who does tech support, and thanks to all the computers he's had to junk over the years he's having to give away some parts for free just to get them all out of his house.

I figure that tomorrow I'll give him a call to see if he can drop a card off.
