This is an idea for a house rule to benefit people actually attmepting to role-play their characters.

If the character successfully makes use of a particular attribute on a constant basis, then they'll have a chance to see if they can raise it by one point.

IE, if a player reads 100 books (give or take) then their Intelligence score will go up by 1 point.

How does that sound?

That depends on the definition of inteligence. In D&D the inteligence represents the ability to lear, use logic, ...

I doubt that this would improve with reading. Reading should give you bonuses to something like the Knowledge skills.

The type of books read also mean a lot. While I like to read fantasy and sci-fi book, I doubt that they would be as useful as The Art of War...

something I've done with mixed success -enough to keep doing it though- is skill specific experience.

Rather than gaining XP normally, every skill you use in a scene you gets a 1 point pip to it. When the pips equal the skill rank, the skill "levels" up 1 rank. Rinse and repeat.

Obviously works best in systems that have discreat skills rather than levels. Twilight: 2000, Star Wars D6, Top Secret: SI, and Mechwarrior all lend themselves to doing this.

I occasionally hand out "general" xp so people can level skills they don't ever use. But it also encourages people to use skills in interesting ways- similar to stunts in Iron Heroes in effect if not in use.

One drawback is that it can also encourage people to become one-trick ponies. If you'll get a point in a skill if you use it, then pick a skill you really like (pistol, rifle...) and use it all the time.

But I don't think it's any worse a problem than in a regular leveling system where people can pick where to stick their points.
