Just got through reading Jihad Hot Spots:3070 and I loved it.

Except for the two or three "F" bombs they dropped into the writing.

Why? There are plenty of "edited" dialog and such throughout the book, clearly meant to keep such language purposely out. When did that word become okay to use in gaming fiction and such? It was bad enough when "pissed off" became commonplace...now this?

And one other problem. When did it become okay to co-author a book and have yourself rescue the Chancellor of the Capellan Confederation! Give me a "F-Bomb"ing break!

How should I know if you're a prude just from that example? Maybe it just irritates you that some parts of the book haven't been held to the same standards as the rest? Or that the editing standards as a whole have dropped?

Personally I couldn't care less if a text clearly labeled as someone's personal reaction was filled with F's. It does show the reader that the guy is angry and at a loss of words when telling his story. But there's really no need to swear in what's supposed to be neutral text.

What is an F-Bomb?

Just the Word, or with additional additives like

F@@K You

F@@K Off

You are a F@@ker

In pure fiction, I have no problem. Examples, the novels. In a game book, no way. A few parents may go off and yank their child away from the game. Also it shows respect to everyone not to use it. They could have done the classic @#%^@#!@#!!!.

AWAD- No son I did not say f@@k, it was fox, yep that is the ticket.

There's no reason for "f-bombs" to be in a Battletech product. William Keith already made up an all-purpose swear word that he uses regularly in his Battletech books (I forget what it was at the moment).

EDIT: The word was "malfing"

Personally, I think our society is prudish. I have no problem with any word in the English language (or any other language) being used in a piece of fiction. I mean, its just a word for Christ's sake. Malfing, frak, drek...etc. What a bunch of crap. Why as a society do we collectively have to be such a bunch of spineless, prudish, constipated jerkoffs. Its rediculous and I'm sick of it. There's a lot of real problems in the world, and I don't need to waste my time worrying about whether some kid reads the word f*!k or not!

And before anyone says "because children will see it" just stop that crap right now. Children curse just like anybody else, and trying to "protect" them is a bunch of hypocritical bullshit.

Not to mention that some kids know more curses than their parents and readily pass them to their classmates...

The real question is why do some have to be boorish, rude, vile, cruel, diarrhea-mouth spouting crass, brash, and utterly disrespectful loudmouths?

And don't give me that poor excuse " The 1st amendment allows us....wah wah wah".

Perhaps when our culture can grow up a little, by teaching the adults behaving like spoiled children some respect for others, then we won't have a need for it.

And perhaps some of the "so many problems" you allude to would get fixed.

I don't have a problem when mature language is used in a book aimed at a mature audience...I think it's poor writing when someone uses the "f word" and the like for no other reason than they aren't good enough to write without using them.

Precisely. Just because you CAN use a word doesn't mean you SHOULD.

Does it belong in literature...maybe not. Then again, William Gibson's work wouldn't be the same if the characters didn't say f*!k, so there's no real reason that it can't appear even in the very best literature.

If you're going to have characters swear, have them really swear or don't even bother. This "drek" shit just bothers the hell out of me.

And I stand by what I said about prudishness in our society. Its a bunch of BS and it has to stop.

I have to agree with Warhammer. Just because you can say something dosent mean you should. And though it is "just a word" the useage of it in everyday language is not necessary. Think back to 10 years ago. the word "f*!k" was rare in language, now its commonplace, and, to me at least its sad that our society has fallen to the state we are in.

what I find funny is the old Eddie Murphy "Raw" and "Delerious" standups. They were funny as hell. But try to find one forsale now. You cant. And why is that? Because HE had them pulled and wont release them for sale again, because HE dosent want his kids to know that version of him.

Watch Spongebob some time. that has swearing in it. When someone says "Oh Tartersause" or "of Fishpaste", What do you think that is. You can make any word a swear word if you want.

Personally I don't care, but I don't think that these words must be used and they can also restrict the book for older kids only, so...

I suppose it should be noted that in the days of FASA there was a book or 2 that included 'real' swear words in them as well. Can't really remember which offhand, but I believe it was one of the earlier novels.

And as far as my personal opinion goes, I have no problem with it as long as it's done in a fictional sense, I.E. a character saying something in a novel. It shouldn't be in something that you expect a younger audience to use, I.E. a gaming book. If only due to the fact that their parents may not allow it, thus limiting your sales.

Maybe, but I'm talking about a sourcebook, not a novel. And part of my point was that within this one, on some occassions, they purposely blotted out the profanity. So then why not blott out ALL of it?

Like everyone else, I watch enough R-rated movies that I'm rather imune to it, by now. But to be honest, it's worse in a product such as this, intended for kids, than in a movie. It's like my mom used it. And while she may (I doubt it), she doesn't around me. Nor I around her. It's just polite.

There are many movies that use such language that I enjoy as much, or more, when edited for TV.

Anyhow, we have enough problems with society attacking role-playing and shootem-up games, without having such language for them to attack as well.

Just my opinion.
