This is a personal custom.

Originally, the pilot started out in a normal Urbanmech. As such, he was typically assigned to security details.

However, his unit was mauled during a recent action. This resulted in his superiors not only promoting him several ranks, but in also having him go out to the front on occasion. After a few battles, the inadequacy of his unit for that type of duty hit home and he set out to rectify matters.

The first thing he did was to gain weight and range. This was done by trading out the AC/10 for an AC/5 and dropping a spare heat sink; to him, the increased range of the 5 outweighs the 10's damage potential. He then upped the engine size and added an extra jump jet to help him keep pace with the other mechs in his unit. Extra armor was added to help him in a stand-up fight, and machine guns were added to help him deal with infantry and battle armor.
