As soon as Ozzy left Sabbath they started to suck...not as bad as the new "bands" but Ozzy ruled.

And Zepplin did influence everyone...because they kick ass.

Tool...indded.

Sorry Zepplin is the most over-rated band in history.....Next to Fleetwood Mac....

Sir HEnry, I'll stick to Ozzy

I thought the most over rate band of all time was the Rolling Stones.

Now....explain this to me?

When you say overrated, do you mean in terms of how good the band was musically?

Jimmy Paige is un-arguably one of the greatest guitar players ever. Not only was he responsible for most of the blues-rock combinations, but his technical skill on the guitar is absolutely amazing. If you dont believe this, go find the DVD or VHS of "The Song Remains the Same" and watch "Dazed and Confused" or "Stairway to Heaven". Paige was also one of the 2 primary writers for the band, having almost as many songs written as Bonham. He was also an inovativist when it came to sound, doing things with the guitar and SFX that Hendrix was parrallely working with.

John Paul Jone was a decent bass player, but his skills on the piano were as high a level as Paige was on the guitar. All the flute parts in Stairway are JPJ playing the organ. Artisticlly, JPJ was one of the best musicians, compareable only to the guys of Pink Floyd.

John Bonham was one of the first drummers to be heavy. He was fast, powerful and technically amazing. He also helped write most of the songs. Any live version of "Moby Dick" shows off his talent.

Robert Plant may not have been the best singer for any band, but his background is music made him the #1 guy to go to when writing. As such, his name is creditied to most of the songs, because he had great input on them. There have been better singers....but he was damn good behind the scenes. As for his singing talent, he fit what Zepplin's sound.

All together they created what most of the world considers to be one of, if not the best, band ever. They had a sound like no other when they played, they had a stage presence that many bands would never come close to achieving, and they had the chemistry to last.

To say they were overated with NO explanation is saying that you have no idea what you are talking about. Could I get some reasons you think like that?

Individually they were wonderful Musicians. But together, there was nothing to seperate them from anyone. Why they got played more than others was a Record Company push. Robert Plant's voice is like a screaching cat.

I must say they have great intros.

I agree the The Rolling Stones is another of the many over-rated bands.

Whoa whoa...nothing to set them apart? Lets see, musically Led Zepplin was years ahead of anyone, in terms of sound and style. Musically they stood out from every other band out there.

So, the vocals were nothing to sneeze at? Most usually aren't. None of the music in the 60s and 70s had great vocalists. All the brit bands sounded like the Beatles, and all the American bands sounded like stoned loser (cause they were). Hell, Jim Morrison doesnt sing that much, he just talks through songs, and yells a lot. At least Plant wasnt just singing like another John Lennon.

Bands like Zepplin, Pink Floyd (after Syd Barret lost it), and Sabbath moved the sound away from the pop-ish Brit rock.

I pretty much hear you saying that "Metallica had nothing to set them apart from the rest of the heavy metal bands in the 80s." I am having a hard time seeing your side of things...

80s metal bands were all a lot like. For example Metallic had a lot of songs that the music sounded a lot like every other song of theirs or should I say the beat of the songs sounded the same. Posion had this problem as well. So did other groups.

Heavy Metal had more then one signature band, just as Classic Rock, which is were Zepplin falls, had just as many if not more then Heavy Metal.

If we toss out the bands that managed to stay in the charts from the 70s to now you cut what four or five rock bands, that leaves enough of the newcomers to be the driving force behind the music.

Sure LZ had some great tunes, but so did CCR and Zappa as well countless others that never got beyond three ablums and broke up.

The question should be what kind of mark did LZ leave on rock music and are they still able to influence things today...that is what I think should be debated here.

I had a huge post here talking about how idiotic it is to say that neither Led Zeppelin and/or The Rolling Stones aren't a huge influence on today's music.

But after almost an hour (both online and off) I have determined that there is no way I can express my feelings on this issue without making it seem like that I feel anyone who thinks that way is a total moron.

So it will have to be good enough for me to just say that I could not possibly disagree more with anyone that maintains that position.

What Metallica did have was the ability to progress. And while a lot of their 80s songs sounded like everyone else's band, they were able to do every sound by themselves. Twisted Sister never sounded like anything BUT Twisted Sister. Metallica took all the different sounds of the 80s and played them all at once. Their signature was blending and weathering the storm...

CCR is one of my favorite groups, but I cant say they were too infulential on anything. They played their music, they were heard, and they left. They may have had small impacts here and there, but nothing really resulted of them...

LZ made a tremendous mark in music. That is undeniable. And really that is the debate. If a band is overated, then why were they so infulential. Musicians following LZ would not pick up and try to play like them if they weren't all that great. Well, dumb ones would, but thats beside the point.

What I watched that said that was a metal-themed episode of '80's Pop-Up Video'.

I guess we watched a different program...I watched something that was called "100 greatest heavy metal act" or someting similar.

There is a site somewhere that lists all the inaccuracies of the Pop-up vidio shows..I'll have to check my links to see if I still have it.

I'd enjoy it very much if you could find it. It would appear that, at best, the series is in limbo with VH1 (and it once was one of their most popular shows, too!) What stinks is that that was the only show that gave airtime to a lot of older videos that I like.
