History

In 2054 Japan decided to reconstruct a legend: from the original blueprints of the famous WW II 70.000 ton behemoth evolved the new fission-powered Yamato! It was launched 2059 from the Kure Naval Dockyards just like ist predeccessor in 1940.

9 Long Tom artillery pieces gave it tremendous shore-bombardment and anti-ship capability. 12 AC/10 were incorporated as a deterrent for smaller torpedo-boats and hydrofoils and 36 MotorCannons kept aircraft away. From 2 helipads the vessel could launch 6 VTOL´s (mostly comprising of a lance of attack-helicopters and 2 transport/SAR VTOL´s).

The Yamato never saw combat in this time and as the world was united under the Terran Alliance in 2086 it was mothballed and displayed in the harbour of Tokyo.

After rotting in silence for over 250 years a citizens initiative(„Save the Yamato“) bought the remnants in 2339, slowly restaurating it till it was combat worthy in 2391 again.

During the Age of War and the Reunification War the Yamato was merely a tourist attraction with the excitement of some live-firing manoeuvres.

As the good years of the Star League begun Coordinator Urizen II of the Draconis Combine wanted to have a showpiece of japanese heritage to boost the morale of his people. In 2651 the vessel was bought, disassembled and transported to Luthien in pieces. There it was reassembled and reconditioned and was ready for service in 2653. The ship was kept in top condition by the Yamato Conservation Initiative.

After the outbreak of the 1st Succession War the ship was confiscated by the DCMS as a security measure in 2786 to aid the defense of Luthien in case of a possible attack. The new owner ordered the first conversion of the Yamato. The YCI demanded top rated equipment for their „child“ like ER-PPC´s, ECM and CASE but because of the raging battles these items were shipped to the fronts to keep Mechs fighting. So the Yamato was upgraded with reliable but older equipment. The turret-mounted AC/10 were replaced by PPC´s because the ammo-bins were needed for a boost of the anti-air capability: instead of the side-mounted AC/10 24 AC/5 were placed there. The whole fire control system was upgraded and a command center was installed. The conversion was finished in 2788 but the expected full scale invasion of enemy forces never materialized!

The situation changed significantly in 3052 as the clans attacked Luthien! The Yamato was ordered to cruise along the shore of the main continent near the Imperial City to give artillery support if needed.
As two Nova Cat dropships landed only 4 km from the shoreline and began to unload their Mechs two previously launched helicopters reported the position back to the Yamato. Captain Nicolas Nakamoto immediately gave the command to open fire! As the first shells exploded at the landingsite the clan commander was confused: His reconnaissance previously found the Yamato but mistook it for a cargo-hauler (No clanner could think of a huge seagoing battleship still in service!)!
The commander had lost two precious minutes while searching for a landbased artillery company before clan fighters found the Yamato firing. Six fighters were ordered to down the spotter VTOL´s and sink the ship.
The on-board flak shot down two of the fighters and damaged two others but was severly mauled by the fighters weapons and bombs. As the first section of the ship began to be flooded with water Captain Nakamoto decided to let the Yamato run aground at the shore. As the burning vessel beached six Long Toms were still firing blindly at the target area!
Finally both dropships were destroyed together with a dozen Mechs. As kuritan aerospace forces had driven away the clan fighters and reported the destruction of the enemy dropships the Yamato caesed fire!
In this 4 minutes engagement the target area was hit by 207 (!) heavy artillery shells!

To honor Captain Nakamoto and his ship Coordinator Takashi himself ordered repair and upgrade of the Yamato but repelling the clans was the prime target so the upgrade was delayed till 3056:
ECM and CASE were installed and the secondary weaponry was replaced: ER- instead of the standard PPC´s, medium laser in place of the outdated MotorCannons and light gauss-rifles, produced on a FWL-license replaced the old AC/5.
In 3058 the Yamato was back in service!

Here are the stets for the 1st and 2nd Upgrade. Yes! Chassis, Engine and Armor are still Techlevel C!

Very awesome fluff! I'm glad I'm not the only one who wants to build war machines from the era of the Terran Alliance!

Good work! Check out my Night Crow if you want to see another ancient design. I have to buy Combat Equipment now.

CE has a real Techlevel-system so you can built primitive vehicles that can only mount steam engines at Techlevel A to hypermodern marvels of technology at Techlevel F (clan).
But on most vehicles you´ll have to loose speed because engines tend to be heavier as on combat-vehicles under the normal rules.
So real combat-worthy vehicles should better be constructed under the BMR rules.
But I think it will work for low-tech tanks of past times.

What exactly are the motorcannons? There seems to be a link in each occurrence, but it doesn't lead me anywhere, and I'm getting awful curious.

I believe he is referencing a Japanese cartoon where the Yamato was turned into a spaceship of incredible power. I forget the name. Probably something along the lines of "Space Battleship Yamato".

The what and the what??

I believe he is referencing a Japanese cartoon where the Yamato was turned into a spaceship of incredible power. I forget the name. Probably something along the lines of "Space Battleship Yamato".

Yup, came out in the states as Starblazers.

One of these in a flotilla would be enough to deter a freakin dropship. I cant wait to see a aircraft carrier.
