I have got to say, that Game 2 of the ALCS should have gone to Extra Innings. While I'm a HUGE Yankees Fan, and always have been and always will be, I'm routing for the Chicago White Sox now in the AL. Now despite my cheering the the Sox now, they got a huge break with the Home Plate Umpire with 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th with the score tied at 1 a piece. Escobar stikes out Pierzunski, but the Umpire ruled that the pitch was in the dirt, so that the batter gets to steal first base. The ball was clearly cleanly caught by the catcher to end the Regular innings. But after 5 minutes of Arguing the call stands and the White Sox have a man on first. They pinch run, steal second and Crede knocks one of the left field wall to win the game.
Major League Baseball needs to be able to appeal bad calls like that. This call is gonna go down in Baseball history now. The game should still be going on as I'm posting this.
EDIT: I just saw the interview with the Umpires and they are claiming that the ball hit the dirt first, bouncing into the catcher gloves. Now while I am no expert on the rules of baseball, bu the last time I checked, if you swing the bat and miss the ball it is a strike, it doesn't matter if the catcher ctaches the ball. Now if you swing the ball miss the ball, and the catcher catches it, and then drops it, you are allowed to steal first Base.
Ok after doing a bit of research I found the applicable rules:

Rule 6.05b - Legally caught: "b) A third strike is legally caught by the catcher; "Legally caught" means in the catcher's glove before the ball touches the ground. . ."
Rule 6.09b - Dropped Third Strike Rule: The batter becomes a runner when (b) The third strike called by the umpire is not caught [see rule 6.05b above], providing (1) first base is unoccupied, or (2) first base is occupied with two out; When a batter becomes a base runner on a third strike not caught by the catcher and starts for the dugout, or his position, and then realizes his situation and attempts then to reach first base, he is not out unless he or first base is tagged before he reaches first base. If, however, he actually reaches the dugout or dugout steps, he may not then attempt to go to first base and shall be out.
So they Umpires claim that the catch was not legal, and therefore the Dropped 3rd Strike rule applies. They claim that they saw a change in direction in their replay. That claim is bogus if they have different footage with their special technology that shows it in better detial, it needs to be made public, because all of the Instant Replay's I saw clearly had the ball legall caught. The Home plate umpire also didn't make a verbal call saying the batter was out, and thus the ball was still in play. Pierzynski himself thought he was initally out, but when he didn't hear the call, he decided that she should make a run to first, but by this time the catch ahd already flipped the ball back to the mound and was on his way to the Dugout.
BOGUS CALL ALL AROUND!!!

The umpire clearly signals "strike" and then "out"...no matter what happened before or after the batter is out. Period.
They can spin it anyway they want, but the ball hitting the ground or not before the catch is made is no longer an issue once the umpire signals "out".

I just came from Judicial Process and a heated discussion (we're all collegues by 500, so we don't want this to get too personal) on Supreme Court power.
It's nice to come back and see just as heated emotions about Baseball. Gives me hope that the world isn't coming to and end.
Other than that, I have no idea what ya'll are talking about.

Chihawk you are absolutely right. The umpire points to his right, signaling the strike, then he does the universal out sign, with his fist iin front of his body.
Now if only the Astro's can beat those pesky Cardnals. . . .
