All of use unit designers over in the design forums have taken as of late to designing Warships and Dropships of various kinds. It has become the accepted practice among us mordelians to supply 200 tons of cargo space for every Aero fighter that a Warship carries; however, it has been asked how much tonnage should be supplied for Battlemechs, Vehicles, and Infantry. I myself had no suitable answer to this question and suggested the same 200 tons of cargo per Mech.

This brings me to the topic for this discussion: For those players, or anyone for that matter, who have played campaigns were resupply was an issue, what do you think is a good tonnage of cargo for these units? Why do you think this? Feel free to explain.

So what is everyones thoughts?

PS: Consider this a Planetary Assult campaign for this discussion.

I'd really want that cargo space on my dropship, not in orbit where my ground troops have no use of it. The cargo has to go in a dropship anyway, so why not have it there to start with?

Spare parts? Armor weighs quite a lot but it's good to have some to start with. Figure at least a thousand tons of spares and gear for a company. That armor really melts away fast, and a few different engines and gyros never hurt if my mechs are of just a few different types. Ammo takes up the rest. Spare weapons is one thing I'll just scavenge or steal.

First priority: armor. That stuff goes FAST, and scavenging the stuff off enemy machines takes time and resources. If you simply bring it with you, you don't have to rely on scragged enemy machines.

Second priority: ammo. Again, this is one of the primary consumables for battlefield units. Without it, many machines are hampered, if not crippled.

Third: food/water. It's simple survival here. The Combat Support Field Manual is an excellent resource for working this out.

Fourth: miscellaneous repair parts. Actuators, myomer bundles, skeleton repair kits, circuit boards, etc. General stuff that a war machine needs to run.

Fifth: rare/complex machinery. Gyros, engines, sensor systems, etc. Not too many, but enough for the odd emergency.

Sixth: anything else.

It would be best to have this stuff standard on dropships, as they are both the ones on the ground with the troops, and they would carry the stuff down to the planet anyway.

Given that these are supplies for the ground for, they should be part of the items setup for the operation via a request prior to the attack and beyond read loads you won't see a lot of the stuff until the operation gains a foothold which could a week or more down the road.

A cargo dropship would be the best place for the larger amounts of this stuff. So 200 tons of missallenious items would work for mechs. Since the cargo listed in most warships is solely for the ship not the ground force.

Maybe everyone is getting confused because i started with mentioning Warships, but I was refearing to the amount of cargo space, be it in a warship or in a dropship, that everyone thought was good per unit.

Unless you were using a warship like my supply ship with hundreds of small craft to ferry cargo about, it is assumed that your carrying this cargo in dropships.

Also, it dosen't much matter to me what is more important then what part wise. I just want to know how much space you would dedicate at minimum to each unit in a planetary assult campaign.

200 tons is a good start. Not only do you have to stock the repair supplies but also the tools and equipment needed to affect said repairs. Personally my long run campaign group had an Invader class jumpship. On it was carried an Overlord, Seeker, and a Mule.
Overlord and Seeker would attack and secure an LZ then the Mule would drop with the rest of the unit plus most of the technical staff and vehicles. We put a higher premium on tech skills and outfitted them well. We had a lance of Karnovs and 2 lances of Planetlifters just for the battlefield salvage crews. The Overlord and Seeker carried some repair parts. mostly field repair items such as armor, heatsinks, minor weapons, ammo, and such.

I don't have much experience with campaigns, but the amount of spare parts would probably be (from the largest to the smallest)

Small craft (they may not see so much action, but they are large), fighters and mechs, special vehicles (super-heavy tanks, maybe artillery ...) 200t

Vehicles 100t heavy, 50t light

Protomechs and BA 10t

I'm not sure, but I think that each bay has some basic supplies and can carry more mechs that can be prepared for action later...

Cargo tonnage for mechs is a difficult thig to gauge. Smaller mechs will require less resources than larger, energy boats don't need ammo, etc. I realize that the same is true for fighters, but fighters have the added requirement of reaction mass, which balances it out.

200 tons is a good average, I could see the range being from 150-250 tons per mech though, meaning the average works perfectly.

For vehicles, both light and heavy, I'd say that 100 minimum though as vehicles are more prone to damage than 'mechs and some of them require a lot of ammo, even the light ones.

Also, most vehicles need something 'mechs don't: fuel. ICEs have to run on SOMETHING...

Well, if you've got enough rubber hoses and senior officers, you can probably run the ICEs on hot air. You could likely run whole battalions on a few social generals.

I think that vehicles aren't so complex machines like mechs, so they can be repaired easily and a lot of spare parts can be produced from various scrap parts.

200 tons is a good start per mech. Armor and ammo goes by quickly and you don't want to keep your mechwarrior starving or thirsty for a long period of time as well.

Food and water should be calculated for all personnel on the ship.

For ship personnel I agree. Ground troops that are basically cargo require added allocation IMO.
