Okay, we all have seen ideas on types of lances...so my question is this:

How do you build your lances? What do you look for in a mech to be in the lance you are building?

For example you are building a recon lance, do you take a Locust over a Mongoose if so why?

Okay looking forward to your ideas.

I look for the best complemeting mechs. Like a Fire support Lance, 2 Archers, a Salamander and a Naginata. They bring down a barrage of missiles and if someone closes they have some direct fire weapons to defend themselves....

"real availability"I mean i must have
the miniature 1st,2nd they should have the same mp rating, 3rd available to the faction
I'm using,and possibly painted .

Speed compatability is what I usually look at first. I usually do not pair 4/6 mechs with those of the 8/12 variety in the same lance. Speedy Mecha go into the Recon and Fast Striker Lances. Medium speed go into the Fire and Battle Lances. That leaves the slowest for those plodding assault lances that are really only slightly mobile weapons plateforms.

Secondly, and sometimes firstly is weapons mix. This is were the mission of the lance comes into play. Recons should be focused on speed, thus about anything goes for weapons, though if I can I like to have a little bit from all ranges. Fire Lances would have an emphasis on long range fire, with only moderate short range...LRM boats would be the favored here. Battle Lances should be able to mix it up at all ranges. Assault, well, they should kill anything they meet no matter how close or far.

I look at a lance (if the choices are available) as a reflection of a company. I try to include recon, fire support, assault and command when building a lance. In addition, like others, speed compatibility is important. That being said, I will take a fast recon mech even though the other 3 may be slower. This mech will be able to fulfill the roles of advanced scout and skirmisher (if required).

Weapons load and mutual support is important, especially if your playing a merc lance or playing a campaign where ammo usage has to watched. Having like ammo to share between lance mates can be a deciding factor in a campaign.

These are just my thoughts.

Well, I'll use a recon lance as my basis for an example.
I like them to all be at least 7/11 speed.
I work my mechs in pairs within the lances as well, and each member of a pair must have complementary abilities with it's mate, while each pair must have complementary abilities with the other pair.
For instance I will pair a Hunter/Killer with an ECM with an Infantry Killer that has a Probe.
Then pair an Electronic Warefare Unit that has TAG, ECM, and a Probe with a weapons boat that will help protect it.
Those 2 pairs work very well together, and can cover a lot of possibilities.
I normally like to have the whole unit (whatever sized) C3 equiped.

If I am playing plain old lance on lance I usually have 2 bruisers for the heavy and assault, then a fast light for harrassment and quick interdiction roles, then the medium is a fairly fast mech that can cover the light if needed and also pull back to the bruisers to watch their backs if I get swarmed.

to build a lance, several factors have to be in mind in order to do it.

1. Mission. probably the most obvious of factors to all in building a lance. Is it recon? is it an assault? Is it a raid? is it for defence.
is it a lone scenario? or is it part of a campaign?

2. type of terrain. Is it a city map? open terrain? woods?

3.BV or mech cost. limited? or unlimited?

now if the question is to build a lance that s flexible enough to do everything?

- I would choose one light (jump capable), and one heavy. The tricky part is picking two mediums.
- I would make one of them a missile boat,
- At least one (if not both) jump capable.

I build them in fluff order. IE, House or Merc, then Regular unit, elite, or militia, then think of mission, and then check may availability of mech minis. if I can, all with the same paint job when they hit the board.

But I am very truthful with the fact I look at fluff, then the mechanics. This gives my units much more of a Btech Universe feel.

Some Examples
Liao Militia- 2 Urbans, 1 Stinger, 1 Vindicator

Kurita Regular (Hussars) 1 Dragon, 1 Wolverine-K, 1 Jenner, 1 Trebuchet

Davion Militia- 1 Blackjack, 1 Centurion, 1 Valkyrie, 1 Crusader

Steiner Elite- 1 Zeus, 1 T-Bolt, 1 Archer, 1 Rifleman.

Mercs can be anything, so then I think size and background. But for pure mechanics, make one pair that can cover the other pair.

AWAD- Got some more paiting to do, after the bathroom remodel job is done.

First what is the mission? If it is general battlefield then I try and build a lance that has good all around firpower and protection, yet is still mobile to be useful.

Second, I try and match movement numbers up. A 4/6 and 3/5 in the same lance are okay, the 3/5 ends up running all the time, but you could use him as your base of fire. Do not put a 3/5 and a 5/8 in the same lance tho' you are very likely to end up with your mechs too spread out. The only time you might want to do this is when the 5/8 mech is a spotter for an artillery lance.

Third, a lance should not specialize too much, that is the job of a mech. The battle field is an unpredictable place and the lance should have SOMETHING to use on the enemy. It may not be particularly good, but it is way better than nothing. 4 Griffins are guaranteed to have problems with an SRM carrying mech that has mobility to stay in their face. 4 Jenners are going to hate a mobile, long range firepower mech. Thats why lances are of mixed types. Mix the Jenners and Griffins together and your lance makes a good team. (7/11 matched up with 5/8, the griffins become your base of fire while the jenners are free to maneuver for the back shot when a short range guy tries to get in the griffins face)

The last point would be to watch for a single mech- mision kill. If you are an artillery lance, there should be 2 'artillery' type mechs. That way if the enemy does manage to get 1 the other 3 mechs can still get the job done. Look at your overall firepower, if 1 mech represents more than a half or even 1/3 of the mission capability, then you may want to rework things.
