ok. we all know that the is xl engines are almost useless.

the clan version is not so bad, because a torso removal dosent kill it.

the clan xxl is not favored, 1] its level 3 n 2] its another quick death engine.

so my question is, then why dont we see more light engines on personel design [ignoring affiliation of course]? why not replace is xl's with is xxl's?

the light engine gives you more bang, with a clan equivalent risk of death.

and while lvl 3, if you got the space [n money isent n issue] why not put an xxl instead of an xl. seeing as your dead just as fast with either. why not squeeze out every last ounce of firepower.

ok last question. should the is light engine be renamed xl. a new version of a light engine with only 1 crit each side. and a level 2, xxl that takes the present place of xl's?

The main reason I don't use it much is that I have not yet ran a mech with it yet.

So while it looks great on paper, I am not sure of it as something I would want to use right now.

But that is only my take. I am sure that it is worth using, since the lack of the third crit means the torso doesn't cost you the mech.

Also I am waiting to see what the RS:3067 brings us as far as refits to the Unseen go an I have been trying to look over the other refits from RS:Upgrades.

I disagree with the statement that XLs are almost useless...

a)lighter mechs can use them to increase their speeds to a point where the mod to-hit them is a good defense to avoid damage

b)support mechs can use them to increase their available firepower

Intellegent use of XLs does make them a viable option in some cases.

Since I found Light engines I try to use them in all my customs. Since I use quads and gausses 2 free crit slots can be a big help. Also I play Lyran so it fits when I make a Lyran mech.

If I remeber right on the Monte Diablo Lryan mechs had a light engine..... and it lived. No the name system works fine. As for more designs using light engines...... can not think of one.

AWAD- XLs single handedly skewed the game..... Dual heat sinks altered it forever

Yes, we all fondly remember life befor DHS. That was when your mech's performance would decrease and you hadn't even suffered any crits yet!

The days of Alpha striking and then having to make that shutdown roll just don't exist now. I'm still not sure which version is better, but they sure are different.

Ok, I just worked it out, It definately was better before.

Ah yes 3025, that took a little more skill to play than the newer stuff I think. Though even now I still never make a mech that can fire everything and not go up heat.

I have a few customs that do.... They only have one Weapon. Speed is their ggreatest asset.

I like running about 4 heat and going up from there...Hate to get cold, don't ya know....

This is the important part: Intelligence.

Giving a 60 ton 4/6 mech a XL engine just so you can throw on a few more MLs makes no sense. It just means you spend that much more money on something you are going to lose. It quits being a unit you will use in a campagin as much as it is a one shot disposible unit.

But you pur an XL enign on a 20 tonner to use as a scout and boost it's speed to 9/15 and never intend for it to be used as a gun platform and it becomes worth the risk of losing a torso.

Light Fusion engines have not appeared in standard designs published ir any TRO so many will not use them until they become readily avialable. Especially those of us in the mercenary community. They are substantially harder to aquire that an XL engine.
