A question for ya'll. Can a vehicle equip 2 engines? I ask cause there is the possibility of 100+ ton vehciles, so could I equip 2 GM 300 Standard Engines? Its not like they have actual critical space to worry about, nor any real existing space problems. Its a 200 ton tank, for Kerensky's sake! And then, if you can, what do you do? Add the MP? Like if I had a 400 and a 200, would I get 6 MP? Just a thought really.

Also, I just thought of an interesting Anti-mech platform. A 100 ton tank with a 50 ton trailer. The tank is amred with your standard 3 or 4x Gauss turret, some missle maybe, and then the trailer has a dual rack of Arrow IV's! All you need is something with an MP of 20+ to run out and TAG something. It would be utterly munchy, but so damn effective if the other guys didnt have fighters!

Thoughts about dual engines:

You know, Talen, this is something that's been on my mind a while. I like the idea, but it might mess with game balance. Given the non-linear power-to-weight curve for Btech engines; allowing two engines on vehicles, and not on mechs, may allow for more potential than even the best mechs could hope for.

Example: If an 80 ton mech wants to have a walking mp of 5 they are either forced to go with a 52-ish ton 400 rated engine, or a 26-ish ton 400 IS XL. By your idea an 80 ton vehicle could reach a cruising speed of 5 for about 17 tons. Even with the best tech available the vehicle beat the mech by 9-ish tons. This would throw the game in favor of vehicles, IMO.

I think a limitation should be that dual engines must be ICE. Note that I also support it for mechs (I posted a mech a while back with dual ICE's).

No reason why B'tech shouldn't allow duel ICEs as they are already in use now.

The problem is that engines in BattleTech increase exponentially with size. So a 400 engine weighs over 6 times what a 200 does, and a 200 weighs almost 3 times what a 100 does. The 500 size engine from MaxTech weighs almost 9 times what a 400 size engine weighs, despite only developing 25% more "power."

This is completely against the real world, where engines are fairly close, on a power per weight ratio. But it was done, I would presume, for balance and to prevent people from making extremely fast and powerful large 'Mechs and vehicles.

So the problem is that using, say, two 200 size engines to get a 4/6 100 ton tank or 'Mech, rather than a single 400 size results in the total engine weight for the two being about a third what it would be for a single 400. Of course, that's the reason for doing it. But it certainly makes the engines much more powerful, for a given weight.

As far as game balance and design, the two 200-size Fusion engines would weigh just about what one 400-size XXL engine would weigh. WIth much less cost. There should be some way of balancing them.

I would say that to add a second engine to a 'Mech, you ought to about double the crits, which is actually what an I.S. XL engine does. There ought to also be some sort of transmission or power splitter, to combine power from both engines. Maybe add 10% to the engine weights.

Just some thoughts. While 2 or more engines are eminently logical, it isn't consistent with single engine designs in the BTech universe.

That's why I think dual engines should be limited to ICE engines. It makes the ICE almost worth having, but they do not surpass regular L2 tech by any means except cost.

In a dual-ICE mech I designed I placed one engine in the RT and one in the LT, each taking up 6 spaces. But I also freed up the engine crits in the CT.

Hmmmm..... that's a way I hadn't thought about, freeing up the CT of all engine crits. Opens up interesting possibilities.
