Overview:
While many at D&K Creation Studios were working steadily on the costly Balsa, there was a
steady group of engineers, technicians, and consulting Mechwarriors at work on the next in
their line of reliable, relatively inexpensive mechs. The result of the so called "Project
Wingman", is the 70 ton Toadstool.
The design stipulations of the project was that the niche of anti-air and general sniper
niche of Battlemech was to be what the chassis was designed around, with the focus being on
the advanced targeting computer linked to its two main guns, while still being armored
enough to make most opposition focus more fire than most would expect on such a frame.
The end result of such specifications was the Toadstool, viewed as an alternate take on the
Rifleman much like the JagerMech by the Mechwarrior's commissioned for consultation.
Capabilities:
To meet the required stipulations, a 280 rated fusion engine was selected as the method of
propulsion, allowing the chassis to move along at a maximum speed of 64.8 KPH.
Endo-steel chassis and 12 double heat sinks were selected as the best option to keep the
'Mech both well cooled as well as allow enough saved weight for the targeting computer
linked weaponry with ample ammo.
The main armaments of the 'Mech were 2 Rotary Autocannon 2s, chosen for their outstanding
range as well as rate of fire to allow the 'Mech to shoot down any air assets as well as
fire at a sustained rate down range. These are linked with the advanced targeting computer
in the right torso, while their ammunition is loaded completely in the left torso which is
protected by case. The designers stated the ammo is placed like this so that should the ammo
blow, the expensive targeting computer won't be taken with it to allow for easier repair.
Their placement in the arms of the mech is notable for the company as they do not have lower
arm or hand actuators unlike any of their other designs, instead focusing on providing a
stable weapon platform over the utility these would give.
For secondary armaments, the Toadstool carries three extended range medium lasers in the
right torso as well as a single extended range small laser in the head. These allow the mech
to defend itself well enough should the enemy get within the minimum range of its primary
weapons.
Protecting the mech is the company staple of a laser anti-missile system in the center torso
as well as 12 tons of standard armor.
One of the rare products to not use easily to acquire in house or other such off the shelf
products, the targeting and tracking system is the widely acclaimed Garret D2jc tracking
system, the same as the standby design Rifleman. This was decided upon to allow the
Battlemech to hopefully meet the same success as the ancient design.
