I might be beating a dead dog (is that the correct proverb?), but this has been floating around in my mind for way too long.
I'm going to out myself by saying: I LOOOVVEE TRO: 3055. More than 3058 and MUCH MORE than 3060 (the weakest out of the whole bunch), and perhaps even more than TRO: 3067. More than the IS section of 3050.
Simply put: It has the best lvl 2 IS 'mechs in it. I hardly ever play that level (preferring Clanners post-3050), but if I do, 3055 is my choice. Ok, the art-work is crap. BUT - the designs are interesting, if not excellent. And apart a series of badly oversized light 'mechs (Falcon Hawk, Scarabus, Hollander) the majority of them turned our really good in model-form.
Especially the medium and heavy 'mechs rule! I just started writing up separate 'mechs, but that is an exercise in futility - there are too many good ones. Basically the only TRO where ALL heavy 'mechs are good or better. Try to prove me wrong!
Then, on another note, TRO 3055 is also a big nostalgia-trip for me. It contains all the Clan-Unseens: Either the true unseens (all the IICs) or the collection of source-book Mechs (Wolf Omnis, Jade Falcon 2nd liners). I dunno, can't really put it in words. Flipping through my copy (which is the most beat-up in my collection, go figure) I get a special feeling that is lacking from 3050 and all the more recent ones.
Bear in mind that I chose to not include TROs 3025 and 3026 into this short commentary. That would be like comparing (for lack of a literary analogy) Joel Schumacher to Tim Burton. _________________ "Rear armour is defeatist!" - unknown Kuritan Mechwarrior

I just wish that they'd have made the image of the Berserker that was shown fighting the Salamander the standard image for the Berserker. The left arm on the mini I have (with the woefully undersized left arm) is a royal pain to put together.
Otherwise, it was a good TRO.

Um...the Falcon Hawk was in 3058, not 3055...perhaps you mean the BattleHawk?

I think 3055 is perhaps the worst of the bunch. It is overflowing with crappy designs, and only has a handful of good ones. The art was not bad, but with mechs like the Berserker, the Snake, the crappy Mad Cat wannabe, the mech with imbalanced armor, and a ton of printing errors that TRO is not winning any medals.

Hey! I love the Wardog (as far as IS lvl 2 'mechs go)!! A wonderful quirky 'mech. With lots of insane features: Imbalanced armour, 5 tons gauss ammo, 2 OS SSRM2s.... And yet, it is still a competent machine!
Yeah, a lot of 3055 machines can be called quirky. And original. And fun.
And the mistakes were later fixed up in the Record sheets. _________________ "Rear armour is defeatist!" - unknown Kuritan Mechwarrior

If you like quirky then more power to you. I personally hate it, and look for optimization and performance in mech designs.
There are some good mechs in TRO 3055. The Penetrator and Gallowglas are some of my fav's. But the bad vastly outnumber the good.

The mistakes are the main reason I dislike the TRO. I already paid $20 for the dang thing, I don't want to pay another $20 to fix the errors and get the upgrades. They should have had it right the first time.

True, but the point is that the fixed-up versions do exist out there somewhere. And IMnsHO, as I stated before, basically all the heavy 'mechs in that TRO are good or more. Ok, the Rakshasa is probably the weakest. And the Anvil is under-gunned. But tough and fast. The Tempest is an over-gunned killer. The Thunder is a close-combat fiend. The Gallowglas is GOD. The Daikyu is great in that it is the only newer fire-support 'mech that goes the way of our beloved Rifleman. The Hercules is an excellent all-rounder that does a durn good job of copying the best 'mech of them all: the Thor. The Bandersnatch is a versatile heavy; a Marauder with AC 10s. Two bonus-points are that the model ain't that bad and that the BV is nice and low. The Rakshasa is the weakest of them all (because a Mad Cat it ain't), but by IS standards still pretty good. The Falconer is the best heavy IS skirmisher (or fast sniper) full stop. And the War Dog I commented on above (apart from that the model also looks surprisingly good).
And the TRO does include some other colourful and excellent designs in the remaining weight-classes. Just not as universally good.
Ok, I'm repeating myself ad nauseum. But at least I'm sticking to my view!! _________________ "Rear armour is defeatist!" - unknown Kuritan Mechwarrior

Check out the Anvil-5M...I think you'll like it...
As for the War Dog, the TRO is mistaken...at least, it adds up to 215 in in the TRO if you have both arms at 24 pts of armor each...
I don't have the 3055/3058 record sheets book, but looking at the HMP version of the War Dog, it looks like they said it took a point of armor from the rear side torsos and added it to the front, added two points armor to the front CT, and 3 points to each leg...
Doing it this way requires either both arms have 20 points armor, or one with 24 and one with 16 (as was indicated in the fluff)...
So, which do you consider more correct?

Well, as far as I know, the Record Sheets are still official, right? And on the record sheets it IS 24 / 16!! _________________ "Rear armour is defeatist!" - unknown Kuritan Mechwarrior
