I signed up for the Commando program too, but i think i wont complete step 2 of the Commando Screening Process because of some of the requirements.

Although i have some minis, i dont want to paint them. Most painted minis look like someone hat diped them head first in a pot of paint to hide all details of the mini.

I have already sent a email to Scott "Clutch" Taylor ( clutch@worldnet.att.net ), the Commando Coordinator, to tell him what i think about their requirements ( they look too much like some pyramidic schemes which are forbidden in Austria ).

MfG, MEX

P.S.: Feel free to ask Clutch about Commandos & MO near you. But dont forget to registrate BEFORE 2.July, or you wont be able to participate.

I live in Vienna, Austria, EU and i am registered as #1030(BloodSpirit with a lot of ProtoMechs as they didn't have the Brotherhood of Randis)

Just look which location is the nearest for me !

Mex,

Yeah, I got your e-mail. You have an extraordinary talent for being able to read INTO things. See, Mex read the requirement that said a Commando should have everything they NEED to run thier event, and was somehow able to interpret that as me telling him that a Commando has to buy everything there IS for Battletech. Language barrier? Maybe, although his english seems top-notch to me.

As far as painting, unpainted miniatures look terrible at a demo. They just do not project the image of Classic Battletech as the three dimensional (Game, Miniatures,Terrain) hobby that it is. That's the reason for that requirement.

And what do you think about my idea of using already painted MechWarrior: Dark Age units ?

P.S.: As i asume that Hans Haderer ( Hans.Hader@reflex.at ) will become a Commando soon, becoming a Commando doesnt have a high priority for me

Clutch,

Are three-dimensional maps a requirement as well? Minis I can work with. I will simply just design scenarios based around the painted minis that I do have. Maps are another issue. While I do have all the released map sets, I do not have 3D terrain, nor do I intend to.

Assumed that i am a Commando that runs the Martial Olypiad, i would need a lot of books with recordsheets of units of which i havn't heard until now !

Just look yourself at http://www.commandohq.com/Files/FactionSpecific.pdf !
Just to name a few of them: Scylla, Ku, Samash, Shoden, Ha Otoko, Pinion, Thresher, Hephaestus, Arcas, Morrigu, Rabit & SAvage Coyote, Cronus, Schiltron, White Flame, Lightray, Legacy, Gurkha, Main Gauche, Blue Flame, Minion, Ajax, Tokugawa, Manteuffel, ...
And these are only some of the units on the 53 PAGES of this PDF file.

I would have to buy HeavyMetalPro and a laptop with a portable printer for organizing a MO event !

Mex,

For special events like Monte Diablo I PDF'd the required Record sheets and sent them to everyone running the event.

For the Martial Olympiad, the players are required to furnish thier own record sheets.

I do everything in my power to minimize out-of-pocket expenses for the Commandos, up to and including providing free product for things that they need but don't have.

And the Commando's are required to verify if the record sheets are ok --> this means that i would still need a laptop & HeavyMetalPro !

P.S.: I already have a Canon BJC-85, but i use it seldom as the ink cartridges are very expensive

That's an easy fix. I'd just send them a copy of HMPlus.

Listen, the program is either for you or it is not. The very last thing I want is a Commando who's hand I have to hold for each and every event. I just don't have the time for it. Commandos are by definition creative and independant thinkers, they don't bring me problems, they bring me solutions. I simply give them the tools to run events, and the latitude to make independant decisions.

I will consider this when i decide if i send you the required material for phase 2 or not.

But there is still one thing i want to know:
Can i use MechWarrior: Dark Age figurines as proxies for painted BattleTech miniatures ?

No,

The MW:DA figures are the product of Wizkids LLC. The Commando Program is affiliated with FanPro LLC.

Two different companies.

Clutch,

if this is the case with HMPlus, make sure Mr. Stull has a copy as I will upload it onto my laptop that I am bringing with me.

And As far as needing to "buy" everything, and needing to have a laptop, and HMplus at events is very short sighted..if you have the Record Sheets that FASA and FanPro have put out, plus the Revised BMR, and mapsheets 1-6 (or close to it) you can run any event that comes your way...and painted minis looking like they have been dipped in paint?...I am not sure what the skills are of the local populus there, but look at the gallerys of a few Commandos in the US and see what they putting out then you may have to take your words back:

Here in Vienna most of the painted BattleMechs which the players use look like they have been dipped in paint.

Of course we have very talented artists, like Norbert, which have beautifully painted minis in Vienna too.

I am not talking about the hard core BattleTech freaks, to which most of the Commandos seem to belong, i am talking about the normal players in my area.

MfG, MEX

P.S.: Dont forget: the entire population of Austria is ~8.000.000 ! How many dedicated BattleTech players would you expect in a small city like Vienna ?
