The only redeeming quality could be it's speed, if only there was no possibility to ignore movement modifiers for attacks from hiding (it's a scout drone after all) or there were no things such as minefields. BOOM! 3 Stingers worth of military hardware in flames.

Correct. Which I've seen listed as both 'Cockpit (Drone)' and 'Cockpit (Small, Drone)'. Since being Drone OS negates the checks for the small cockpit, I prefer the one which omits 'Small' since it's unnecessary.

Only reason to use a standard Cockpit is if you were Droning an existing Battlemech.

Don't forget that for those 2 tons you also get a seat, sealed compartment for the pilot, life support, command consoles etc. So it seems to me that you can still climb in the drone and drive it yourself. All of this could be connected directly and be even smaller IMO. This way it feels like you are installing robot hands to guide standard control sticks and a camera to watch the displays that show what's on cameras outside. If there was just single Drone Cockpit item and not Small Cockpit + Drone Control System it would have felt more natural. Just saying.
