I have a few pet peeves with mech designs.

One of them is that if a mech has a lower arm actuator, it must have a hand actuator unless it's sporting a PPC or a large-bore autocannon.

Another is that a good mech will have at least one forward-facing energy weapon in the torso or head, so as to allow the pilot the ability to make a fighting withdrawal from the field in case the mech loses its arms.

Trading the UAC/5 for a RAC/2 and going to Endo gives me more than enough room to stick a large laser in the center torso. Not only does this mod considerably up the level of firepower, it also ups the survivability.

Fluff:

Based on feedback from numerous pilots who were operating Cataphracts during the FedCom Civil War, it was realized that the mech was rapidly getting left behind on the battlefield. In particular, the mech suffered from a one-two punch that was beginning to severely limit its usefulness. The first was that its two main weapons were ammo-dependent, putting a burden on the pilot in the event of a lengthy engagement. The second was that it lacked a single weapon or mix of weapons that could down an opponent in short order, practically guaranteeing said long engagements. With that, the Ultra 5 was replaced with a RAC for the sake of raw firepower, and a large laser was added to the center torso as a back-up weapon for the cannons. Following up on another complaint, a machine gun was added for anti-infantry capability.

However, in a twist of fate, the 5D was not ready and in use among the forces of the Federated Commonwealth until after the war was over. Instead, the 5D would come to see glory in another war, the effort against the Word of Blake. Perhaps the most famous user of the machine is Colonel Adonis Adenn, commander of the military garrison for the planet Numenor, whose exploits were promptly used to the company's advantage when it came to selling the design after the war.

With its proximity to New Avalon, the inhabitants of the planet Numenor felt free to take warfare for granted. Not only was New Avalon the far larger, and far more likely, target, in the event that Numenor did get hit first help was just a jump away. As such, when the then-Captain Adenn, a recent veteran of the Civil War, and his lance arrived on-planet with their technical team in tow as part of a goodwill / recruiting visit, they were originally rebuffed.

However, Adenn had a mere forty-eight hours to lament his situation before the Jihad struck Numenor. The local garrison and police force, soft from inaction, were only able to mount a haphazard resistance; most of them were captured along with their weapons and machines, and the planetary leadership officially surrendered within days. This left Adenn and his forces the dubious distinction of being the only organized resistance left on the planet. Rather than waste time, however, he and his soldiers began to probe along the fringes to gather intelligence, striking when they felt they had an opening. In particular, Adenn and his mech soon demonstrated an ability to bring down light mechs within a single volley, thus helping to maximize what ammunition he had.

After several successful raids, those garrison members and police officers who had escaped capture, along with a number of volunteers (mainly young adult delinquents who had finally found an outlet for their destructive impulses), caught wind of the fact that Adenn's team was still free and eventually succeeded in linking up with his unit. By this time, he had captured a trio of near-pristine Mercury mechs that he could use as trainers, and in short order the lance grew into a full company as his new reinforcements received training and the most successful received captured mechs as their own personal rides. Within a year, the Blakist forces on Numenor were hemorrhaging soldiers and machines to an extent not seen since the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan back on ancient Terra, due in large part to Adenn's "one volley, one kill" tactic and the ability of the ex-delinquents to set up booby traps. Blakist forces from New Avalon and other planets were forced to head for Numenor to help suppress the resistance, ironically encouraging the resistance on the planets that they had come from.

The crowning moment for both Adenn and his 5D came when the commander of the Blakist forces tried to set a trap for him at one of the last ammunition factories that the Blakist forces still controlled (the factories having been forcibly constructed by the Blakist regime to help the war machine). Adenn and his team saw through it, and so devised a strategy that would enable them to shake up and disrupt the Blakist forces despite the latter being far larger. The disruption worked so well that Adenn was able to walk right up to the commander's Grand Crusader in the middle of the battle and unleash a full-bore volley at point-blank range before following it up with a kick. An autocannon round and an LBX slug found their way into the Grand Crusader's head, knocking the commander unconscious and rendering him unable to keep the mech from toppling over under the damage. The mech landed face-first, killing the commander instantly. Not only did the shocking victory break the remaining Blakist forces on the planet, footage of the incident as recorded by a reporter was circulated as widely as possible using the surviving interplanetary communication systems.

With the footage inspiring rebellion on the nearby planets and the Numenor forces in disarray, the Word of Blake was ultimately forced to pull back to a single continent. Although the plan was for them to regroup and repair, all it did was give a single concentrated series of targets for Adenn and his fighters, who crossed the waters by various means and moved in to mop up. Within two years of the Blakist forces arriving, Numenor was free again and Adenn's 5D was being hailed as a large part of the reason why it happened.
