Long and short of it?

When the Playstation 3 was originally released, there was an option to where a person could run Linux as the main operating system rather than the OS provided by Sony.

However, Sony, apparently upset by all the people choosing Linux over their own OS, went back and retroactively denied people this right; a software "update" that was sent out over the internet deactivated this feature in all Playstation 3s that were connected at the time.

In retaliation, a group of hackers publicized a way to breach the security on the PS3. With this breach in place, anyone who knows what to do can encrypt things so that they can run alternate operating systems or even pirated software.

I've seen the article's explanation for exactly what the breach happens to be, and quite frankly it relies on someone at either IBM or Sony making such a basic, rookie mistake in the encryption process that I am actually astounded by the sheer idiocy of it. Someone needs to quit with all speed, and a few executives need to hand in their resignations on the way out the door. There's no excuse for that kind of stupidity.
