==Overview:==
One of the earliest designs created by Clan Wolverine once they left the
other clans. Once they had wandered for seven years they found an isolated
region of space that offered threee habitable systems within one or two jumps
of each other. During the first years there the Wolverine Council of Warriors
was greatly concerned with the possibility of being discovered, either by the
other Clans or by explorers from the Inner Sphere.
So began an intense period of construction, most especially on Warships
as the Wolverines knew they would be easily overmatched on the ground unless
they had a strong defense in space to lessen the number of intruders that were
able to land on the ground.
While these fears proved to be almost completely unfounded, the
Wolverines have continued to this very day to keep a strong black water navy.
Far stronger than seems appropriate considering the disproportionally small
number of worlds to defend compared to the size of the fleet.
This large number of naval vessels served their masters well when battle
finally did come. Having around 10 heavy warships and twice that number of
lesser ships in defense of each of the three home worlds with another dozen
ships patrolling the key installations in the asteroid belt of the Haven
system allowed them to survive the intense attacks of Clans Steel Wolf and
Hell's Horses once the Wolverines revealed themselves and joined the new Star
League in late 3062.
==Capabilities:==
Mounting a lot of weaponry for a cruiser, even for a heavy cruiser, the
Vortex Class is impressive. However this is at the cost of human comforts.
Smaller grav decks and few recreation rooms only serve to reinforce that this
is a ship bred solely for war.
Those large weapon arrays make this class of cruiser the equal of many
Star League era Battleships, impressive moreso because it is built using Star
League technology. Again this serves only to illustrate the nature of the
times during which the design was conceived.
==Battle History:==
The only battle this class has participated in is the battle of nine
days, a terrible battle for air superiority over the Wolverine home worlds.
The Red Lightning aquitted itself especially well in the final assault on
Haven by the Steel Wolves.
Two other Vortex Class ships participated in that battle, another
assigned to the Haven Protectorate group and the one assigned to the Haven
Asteroid Patrol.

Two other Vortex Class hulls were laid but were reclassed as Craven Knight
Class Explorer Cruisers and completed with vastly different systems. Namely
Lithium Fusion batteries to facilitate exploration, three times as many
docking collars, enough fuel and foodstuffs for 4 years, and water capacity
for 6 months. Both were deployed several times, before jumping outsystem and
never returning. It is unknown what their fates may have been.
