All variants presented here are derived from the basic 1X model, but the armour has been relocated. If you want to keep the original feel there is no obstacle to switching equipment back to RT.

1E replaces one of the heat sinks with AC ammo and moves one rear firing laser to left arm and drops the PPC in favour of a LL and two tons of armour. It can't force piloting skill rolls at range anymore, but added armour and longevity make up for that IMO. More of a brawler... Attempts to replace the AC with laser ended up too Warhammer-like for my tastes, so I have to play with the concept a little.

Just trying to make it more sniper-ish, with 1P I've replaced the AC/10 with an AC/5 with two tons of ammo. If you want to force rolls at long range then simply replace the SRM-4 with LRM-5 (lame solution, but it can do the trick if the dice are right. LRM-10 would be better tough). At short range you can still hold your own, since there is no reason why not to fire the PPC and AC into the fray, just watch the heat.

A simple mod, the 1Y removes one of the heat sinks for ammo, moves the AC and relocates armour to cover the torso better. It can still handle an alpha-strike and keep cool as long as you maintain some firing discipline.

A jumping Cataphract. I think that sums it already well enough. Two MLs and the PPC had to go, but it did the trick nicely.

This, in a way, is quite similar to the -2X, but keeps the flavour of the -1X. I do like it, but the main problem I've had with the -2X is the very lack of PPC-AC10 1-2 punch. I'd much prefer keeping that PPC!

Seeing what I wrote above, it is strange that I would quite like the variant. But hey, the AC5 is a great gun! Wink (see sig) However, I would probably implement it differenly: I would move the ML to the torso, the SRM4 (with the LRM5 option) to the LA, keep the AC5 at 20 shots and leave armour and HS untouched from the -1X. Yes, it is a suboptmal set-up, but it allows for maximal fluff-correctness! Wink Oh, and seeing as that suggested set-up would be a balanced mix of -1X and -2X (in terms of layout), and even resemble the unique -3X, I'd either call it the -1Xb or - quite stubbornly, in the face of official printed material - the -3X!

Now, what about combining the -1Y and -1E? I like that this keeps the PPC. I like the armour of the -1E (or -2X). I dislike the rear-mounted MLs on the -1X, they seem quite anachronistic. We could drop those to get the armour of the -1E and otherwise go with the -1Y. I would like that a lot!

You mean the Lao Hu? Surely not, which is why I would change it slightly - put that PPC back in! I always thought that the 3025 was dearly lacking PPC-AC20 Mechs! Drop the ML, reinstate the PPC and then either put the HS back up to 16 (may be needed now), or add a ton of ammo, or drop a 2nd HS and put the armour up to 13. I possibly like the first choice best.

Perfect! OTOH, we could make this into the predecessor of the CTF-3D. Drop the LL for an AC5, sacrificing the HS.... Simply for fluff reasons, and because, well hey - the AC5 is a great gun! Laughing

Rear mounted weapons are defeatist... well I think that they were integral to 1X design, because the designer either expected the CTF to be surrounded by enemies if pressed into close range combat or fielded in urban area, but more likely the CTF is equiped to deal with pursuers in case that it retreats from combat to get more ammo. Sure that it can twist torso and aim it's arm lasers and PPC, but these weapons provide some wide firing arc that can cover multiple pursuers and keep enemy lights at bay.

This is a configuration that I originally rejected, but you can see easily why it's designated as E. I think you'll agree that the AC is a vital thing fluff-wise and that the LL is not a full replacement, but the possibility to use lightweight energy weapon and add theat sinks is still here... I did my best not to make the 'Mech into another WHM-6D, but I's difficult at best. I present it just to show what possibilities did I explore before creation of the variants in the original post. For something more like you'd like look below for the Y2.

Well, I've intended it to stay away and spit projectiles as long as it can, although for real sniping we can try this... Two great guns are better than one, aren't they? Very Happy

I don't want to get rid of the rear lasers or heat sinks either, since the original is expected to be in thick of combat where it can use the first and is clearly expected to deal with 19 heat from AC / laser / PPC combo. There may be a solution to this. Cut the heat to 16 (18 while runing) by removing the RA laser. Thus you effectively prevent excessive heat generation by front or rear arcs and you can remove another heat sink to get the armour.

I think this may be the thing you're looking for...

No, I mean the Caesar, which is a direct derivate of the Cataphract chassis. Gauss / ER PPC / MPLs would be direct successors to current weapon mix, which was built a bit more for heat ballance (8 LL + 3 ML + 7 AC + 2 run - 16 HS = 4 heat).

Or we can make the J2 (Davion love for PPCs and JJs is a well known thing afterall) and state that green FedRats couldn't handle the heat even with this neat package (10 PPC + 3 AC + 4 JJ - 13 HS = 4 heat; 6 MLs +3 AC + 4 JJ = 0 heat). While attempting to fix the 'Mech they overreacted and not only replaced the PPC with completely out of place AC/5, but also managed to bring back both rear lasers and original heat sinks, which screwed the 'Mech enough that not even the Grey Death Core was able to fix it Very Happy

After looking into the the TRO I realized that the JJs shuld be in legs, but guess what I think about that...
