Something I haven't really seen before: a colony ship! Long range, plenty of passengers, and GOBS of food and cargo. Everything you need to start up a nice colony.

Very nice ship! Lots of food to start the colony with, lots of cargo for all the machines and equipment they'll need and an all energy weapons loadout!

I agree with Cain. This needs some form of protection. From Aero Space fighters or Vtol's to a lance of medium mechs. But other than that it is a very nice and often forgotten ship.

One other question though. Why small lasers? why not upping them to Medium lasers and giving it 40 to 60 of them? Just a thought. (sighs deeply I still need to get HMProAero.

The added small craft and vehicle bays are very useful and a great idea! But I have to disagree with Stinger here: Dedicated combat units like AeroSpace Fighter or combat VTOL are not a good choice. It seems to be more of a civil colonisation ship than a military one.
In my opinion the first weapon loadout is the better one too because the second looks more like a military one! Just drop some large lasers too!

I agree. A single lance of combat vehicles (Vedettes? Bulldogs? Goblins?), plus maybe 8 normal vehicles (more probably in storage) and perhaps 2 general-use VTOLs.

Umm I dont know. A civilian colonization ship should have some for of protection. Its landing on a planet that may have been surveyed but with pirates running around landing anywhere with NO protection would be flat out stupid. No more than a lance of mechs or a combined lance of Mechs tanks and a vtol to scout.

Unless you are planning on having them use the drop ship as its sole form of defence I just see bad things happening to the civilians that go out and start a new life on a planet, only to get killed by pirates, or something worse.

That would be the idea, actually. The colonists would live in the shadow of the dropship while getting the initial colony set up, then steadily cannibalize the dropship as they expanded. By that time, follow-up transports would likely have come in (unless the colony wanted to be insular, or stay hidden, in which case it would have to stand on it's own). The follow-ups would bring more soldiers, more military equipment, etc.

If you want defense then why not to take some prefabricated turrets, which the clony may install to any fortification they decide to build, with you? Additional weapons can be included in cargo...

Ok just playing devils advocate because I can. If the colonists get attacked by anything with a PPC or LRM launchers they are going to be in a world of hurt. The attackers stay at long range and blast away at what ever they want as the dropship sits there HOPEING they are stupid enough to get in range.

I really like the design, but I still think it needs some form of mobile defence. Just me though.

Like I said, REAL military support would probably be on follow-up transports. Besides, there can only be so many pirates out there (they can't attack EVERY colony).

If all else fails there's PLENTY of room in the cargo hold.

Colony ships were mainly done in the time of Star Leauge and earlier. So loads of weapons makes no sense. They would have had an escort most probably. Someone to help establish the site and the return to tell everyone the colony is up an running. The first couple of colony ships on site would haev to stay since hte colonist would need the power source and the machine bays to get the place up and running. I do agree some small bays for Aerospace and Shuttles make much more sense.

AWAD- I have one in my world that Pirates are using, the Horde.
