My collection of minis is huge in numbers of painted, assembled (and sometimes basecoated), and still in the blister. It's been two years since I last did any painting, but I still go to my old game store and lay down another hundred bucks on every few months. Any way you look at it, I got enough minis to fill purchase orders for the SLDF... the 2750 SLDF. 
On the few occasions when I get to sit down and really play a game any more instead of just fake it on a computer, I like to match the mini to the mech and if the game is at my house, then there will only be occasional need for substitution. But if I can't match them right, big deal. Any mini will do when necessary.
The old card standups would be fine too.
To me the main point I guess it to have the minis, some of us paint better then others, but a painted mini can make more of an impression. A couple years back I got to play a game in Houston that I had heard about and happened to have a saturday off work and went for it.
Between the bunch of us there, we had all the right minis but all of theirs were just base coated, I was the only one that brought a box of painted ones. I never thought my own painting was all that special, mostly I wound up doing 2 and 3 color camo jobs. But I was surprised by the impressed look they all had as they looked at them, they must have thought I can paint pretty good.
A mini is a mini, but a painted mini, even a half decent one, can be seen as something of a showpiece.
It is something that computer games lack, that physical connection to the game. When your computer game is done, it is gone, your score or whatever, your saves, are gone. Its time on the hard drive is limited.
But with minis, no matter how long it has been since you could call yourself a regular gamer, even it has been 10 years and more now that you've been working every saturday save for the occasional federal holiday and vacations.... well, you still have those minis stored away and when you want to, you can still take them out and hold them in your hand and remember back in the day when you were a young guy with all the free time in the world and played some Btech almost every weekend... and maybe do a little bit of painting that afternoon.

| Well, I love painting and playing with painted mini's. I have well over a hundred including vehicles, mechs, battlearmor, dropships. But, we don't limit the action by requiring a painted figure in order to use the mech. I also use lots of terrain because it adds another dimension. Also, most of our group has been playng so long that most of us have children old enought to play, and chits and cardboard just doesn't cut it for kids.

My preferences for pick up battles are:
* Metal/plastic/resin miniatures over cardboard
* No proxied 'Mechs
* All miniatures mounted on hex bases
These rules greatly reduce confusion and friction during the game. I have a hard enough time trying to identify all the newer 'Mechs when they aren't proxied, never mind having to remember which 'Mech is which. IMHO cardboard stand-ins are just plain cheesey; they are easy to knock over, and don't have hex bases. Finally, hex bases are essential to avoid arguments about which way a 'Mech is really facing.
When running a campaign, I would expect that miniatures be painted as well, even if they only have a monochromatic paint scheme. If I am going to put the effort into coming up with campaign materials, the least my players can do is shell out a few bucks for the correct miniatures and spray paint them black or something!

| It has been my experience that, as soon as a player (who does not normally buy minis) gets a mini for his current mech, said mech soon ends up getting destoryed.
