They are going to play them at A-Kon and I am trying to get some hints on how to play them.

Try to specialize your protos. LRMs lasers whatever becasue they cant carry enough to be generalized. I have played (not officially) with this star (weapons)
ER LL
LRM20
AC2
Plasers
NormLasers
That is good becasue your LR protos can hide and your others can annoy. SR ones load up with armor and JJ and make em FAST!
not guaranteed against mechs but works against protos well.

yes, but you have decent range, and a +3 modifer.
and good armor.
i guess it's personal bias slipping in again.
i hate ammo.
and i hate ammo explosions.

remember ICER, that proto's have that auto-miss slots on there hit location.
use gurrila tactics. lots of gurrila tactics. as proto's are designed and feilded in combined fire teams, use it. my favored protos are the minotor, kraken, and roc.
just keep your speed up, use terrain, surround your opponets on so many sides, that they cant fesibly target all of you. then give em both barrels.
oh, a key to proto's. armor support, via mechs or tanks.

they ahve their uses...mostly for tying up mech or armored forces..they work great in an ambush situation

Play them like VERY light 'Mechs 
I love ProtoMechs, they are the sole reason why i ever considered playing something other than 3025.
