I like my animals somewhat intelligent. Thus, if it's between random cat and random dog, I pick random cat. However, my favorite pets (actually wrote pest. Little Fruedian slip there) have been moderate to large size dogs (retrievers, mostly, a couple shepherds. I can't stand huskies.) Once had a friend with a Great Dane. Wonderful dog. Best behaved animal I think I've ever seen.
I have also gotten along well with Scotish Terriers, and they are about the only small breed I can stand.

I like my animals dumb. It's amusing and I can feel like the smart one in the house. At least til the wife gets home.

If you want entertainment, get a cat.
I like cats more but at present the only pet I have is the computer mouse

I like em both but cats seem to be more intelligent than dogs. At least unlike dogs they have some personality. They wont come running to you if they dont feel like it.
The best pet i had is still my rabbit. There is something oddly gratifying when i stared into his beady black eyes and he just stares back in deadly silence (rabbits dont make a sound ever ! aside from mating...) while he rest on my lap.

Rabbit can hiss and chirp. We had one. The cats liked to play with it. Until he thumped their faces real hard. Then it was tag only.

That's no ordinary rabbit ... 'tis the most foul cruels and bad-tempered thing you ever set eyes on.
Also, if you think that they are quite, you've never heard one being attacked by a fox.

Short story: I had a old male tom cat named Boots. ( he was a Persian with 4 white feet) I also had a black and white guinea pig named Scooby who lived in a 10 gal aquarium that sat on the floor in our kitchen. Boots being the outdoor hunter/tom he was figured that my pig was just a short eared rabbit. so he jumped into scoobys cage an gave my pig a sniff. scobby bit him right on his nose ( guinea pigs have BIG teeth!) boots went straight up. 90' left then 90' down and he NEVER screwed with my pig again. he would even find the highest place he could hide when I used to let scooby out to run around. ( ever try catching a guinea pig on the floor? usually took me about a half hour to corner his little fat behind. they are VERY quick. the dash just out or reach and turn and actually giggle at you.)

Although, once the 2 cats I have go to that great scratching post in the sky, I am DONE with pets. My kids can enjoy all the outside critters like worms,grasshoppers and toads.

Just keep an eye out so that they do not bring those OUTSIDE critters inside. My 3yr old was trying to smuggle a worm into the house last night.

I used to put animals like worms and frogs and such in my pockets and forget about them. My mom would find them when she did laundry, much to her dismay.

They also will scream like a banshee when hurt. It was the most soul rendering sound I've ever heard. Until the first time my baby girl fell and banged her head and started wailing herself that is.....

I grew up with 5 cats and two dogs. I missed the dogs...not the cats.
