Yah. Given the historical association, this is similar to making an Aerofighter specialized in ground attack and bombs and calling it Mustang.

Yah. Given the historical association, this is similar to making an Aerofighter specialized in ground attack and bombs and calling it Mustang. |
Actually, before the P51 was given the Rolls-Royce Merlin engine (and, IIRC, a supercharger…or was it a turbocharger?), it did not perform well at altitude, and the RAF used it rather successfully as a ground-attack fighter-bomber.
It was only after they tested it with the different engine that it became the famous long-range bomber escort and air superiority fighter that could make it to Berlin and back.

I actually did know that. One of my favorite facts, and why I had hope for the F-35 today. Amazing the number of pieces of prototypes in WW2 that because of pressure from the war the government never gave up on that became real bawlers. P-51, P-38, P-40, FW-190, B-29, etc.
