Its always kind of bothered me how limited some of the skill sets were in Battletech/mechwarrior. I remember talking about it with a group I used to play with. One of the players demanded skill checks for EVERYTHING, and if it wasnt on the skill sheet then you could NOT do it. It was great fun when the DM made him crash his car and he nearely killed himself because he didnt have Drive/wheeled vehicle.

now I bring this up because in a scociety like they have in BT wouldnt you want to start by traning as mech pilots? so everyone should have a little bit of mech traning, once you flunk out, then you go to tracked and wheeled and so fourth, until you end up as a grunt. I always thought that BT should have done more of a base skill set. Like Drive Military Vehicle/ ground, when they went to the third gen rules. I can also see mech pilots though being called into other duties during times of peace. So it wouldnt be unlickley for them to have other driving skills. Personally I have always thought that a mechwarrior should be able to drive anything simply because, it makes sense. They should have recieved some sort of traning simply to be able to help around the base again during a time of peace. And again on a friday night they have leave how are they going to get to the club for R&R? Wont be by Mech.
