Yeah, but the most impressive is the hatchet attack that crushes a cockpit. Nothing says loving like a mech decapitation.

So use a 60-ton mech with active TSM and punch twice instead! Two possible 12-point hits on the punch list!

Maybe. I'll admit that hatchets are fun, especially with a head hit. And a hundred tonner with TSM is dealing 40 damage each time - good-bye body part.
But, except for the novelty, I prefer kicks. chihawk has already mentioned most of the reasons; no tonnage, and you can fire all your weapons. Besides, it's fun to give a prone 'Mech a kick in the head or ammo bin.

Hadn't thought of that, right there with the crunchable goodness.

Im not saying kicks arent effective, far from it. Ive used more than a couple to good effect.
I just have a soft spot for hatchet wielding mechs. Something about a multi-ton monster swinging an axe the size of two subway cars just screams 'This guy really wants to beat my @$$!'

A 100 tonner with TSM should be punching anyway...2 1:6 chances to remove the head vs 1 1:36 with the hatchet.

Tell my why you bothered to figure or look up those odds.
Physcially, nothing beats a double punch and a kick! Thats a good deal of damage, reguardless of size!

I thought you're only allowed one type of physical attack per physical phase?

Right! One hatchet-attack or two punches or one kick!

It's basic math dude, and takes about a quarter of the amount of time to figure out than it does to say "You can only do one kind of physical attack per turn"
On the punch table you need a 6 to hit the head, and there's only one 6 on a d6. That makes the odds 1:6
On the regular table you need a 12, which can only be gotten by rolling two 6's, of which we've already determined there's only one 6 per die....as you need two of them it's 6x6, or 1:36.

Agreed, and I was thinking about that the other day. What would make them viable, even if only marginally?
Make them punch chart only?
Like many of us assumed for so long. Yes it is a 1 in 6 killer for heavy mechs, but the Gauss, ERPPC and others are 1 in 36 at range
Reduce the weight?
Like .5 tons for every 15. That means the Hatchetman Hatchet is only 1.5 tons, allowing 1.5 tons more armor. But at the 75 ton level that is 15 points for only 2.5 tons, but no range.
Full body but auto critical?
So it can hit any where but you either get 1 crit no matter what or roll no matter what? Makes it a little bit feared.
Anyone want to playtest those ideas? Or tried anything similar?
AWAD- I find the charge just to be so much more fun

The fact that mechs can even physical is silly...

The idea that they can isn't, but the act of doing so usually is (ie, ALL that fire you have to deal with, and any mech that can do a decent physical can't go fast...)
