I think picking the argueably weakest Dragon makes this a biased matchup. Which is confirmed by your line "Snakes will choose the dragon out of loyalty..." which is interesting, cause I'm not a snake and i'm picking the Dragon!
I'm going to argue this, and I'm arguing in favor of the Dragon. And I think I have the facts to back me up. Not only that, I'm not going to stick with the C (which will be presented) but ALL the Dragons to show what a pathetic machine the Ostol is.
<b>DRG-1C Dragon</b>
Armed with an AC/2, LRM 10 and medium lasers, the main tactic which many have talked about is staying out at range and sniping. I disagree. Laser Boats have a huge disadvantage in 3025 and you have to exploit it: heat.
My strategy is get up close and dirty. The Dragon has a reputation as a brawler and it is well earned. When that laser boat opens up with all weapons at close range their heat will spike hard. The Dragon can alpha strike and move at FULL speed without any problem. If the Ostol wants to move its limited to a medium laser and large laser. Stick to seven hexes and the Dragon is now outgunning the Ostol. If the Ostol begins to overheat (and you have the armor to absorb some alpha strikes barring lucky shots) the Ostol slows down and you get to go after its back. Now the Ostol is at a severe disadvantage cause a single wave of missiles or a few well placed laser shots will destroy the Ostol now.
Armor and heat win the battle.
<b>DRG-1N Dragon</b>
Same trick as before. USE YOUR ARMOR! Take a few hits and get in. The AC/5 will begin to tell immediately while the unit heats up, keep the battle fast and furious. If they slow down, you've got them. If they overheat you have them. Use your superior heat control and armor protection to whoop their uppity butts around. Let the numbers win the battle. Moving at top speed also makes you harder to hit, which will make them wasting fire power and gaining significant heat for no return. Get to the back and you win the game.
<b>DRG-1G Grand Dragon</b>
Here the battle shifts. Move at top speed firing ONLY the PPC at range. Wear down that weak armor outside of the range of those lasers. You don't over heat and if they open up with both large lasers while trying to keep up with you, they begin to overheat. The Grand Dragon has ALL the advantages in this match up. Superior damage potential and range. It will be hard to hit, but with an unlimited supply of shots, who cares? Just keep pounding. The numbers, again, will eventually be in your favor.
All of these depend on a lack of lucky shots, but then, the Ostol could be taken down by a lucky shot in the other examples already brought into play by other posters. I, however, believe that the lack of heat sinks, and patheticaly thin armor will tell this battle.

What can I say... DRAGON. Only a few warriors posting have the wisdom to realize that it is the warrior, not the machine that will win the battle. When your karma is strong, your dice will be hot.

However if equally skilled pilots are on both sides, and get equally lucky, the Ostol will tear your Dragon to pieces.

Yes Kiris65-sama, perhaps.....
And to ralgith, I never rely on luck, only on karma. The Ostsol is not a true warriors Mech, therefor it cannot channel a true warriors skill onto the battlefield. The Dragon however is the ultimate avatar for a samurai, therefor, I submit that when properly used in combat, it cannot lose.

sure  if you wanna fight it out with someone do a best of 5 with both pilots being of equal skill levels, I would go with 3/4s
I however am not going to fight on either side, have enough on my plate as it is.

Or you could use different P/G levels each time. Say, you start with a 4/5 an work you way down.
Or different terrain.... with the same P/G scores.

Now we're talking! I didn't expect this discusion to lead to a "honor duel". So, will we see a Drac step up to defend the House design (as flawed as it is)? ANd who will take the little seen and quite ugly laserboat" on to the field? Stay tuned as honor is insulted and faces areslapped with brick filled gloves.

I read it, and I agree that the Dragon could win if piloted properly. I just think the Ostol has more chance of winning.

Matchups. I love the Dragon and I use it whenever possible. All three designs (though I have rarely used the C. I much perfer the 3025 Grand Dragon) have seen lots of actions against laser boats of all sorts, including the Ostol. But also the Flashman, Exterminator, etc. I find that the armor and heat disipation just works far better because yeah they are firing at me, but a Mech CAN absorb a LOT of punishment.

OK here are the results. We were able to get in one fight between these mechs this weekend. After a tough fight, the Ostol came out on top. I was fighting the Dragon and was putting in a good showing. Then he got a lucky CT crit role and took out my LRM10 before it was empty (hate those snake eyes rolls). It was all down hill from there. Without the distance advange the Dragon was easy pickings. He eventually legged me after getting a gyro hit. So without the lucky crit this may have turned out differently.
(btw I have also discovered that this new opponent is a better playing than my other current opponent. Our future battles should be interesting.)
