My thoughts on the American government collapsing is this. no guns and investors get scared, markets fall, people stop spending, markets fall farther, people get desprate and start looking help, people who still have money step in and start taking control and as their power grows the government get scare starts trumping up fake charges and trying to bring people, who the masses veiw as heros, in and end up sparking rebellions. (thats almost exactly what happened during the 20s and 30s with the crime bosses, only the bosses were villians and the charges were true so the people didn't veiw them as heros)
I'm yet to think of a way to keep nukes from working, they would work because the HE they use is non convetonal. but I do intend to get rid of them somehow
The American government will still exist but much like the Roman Senate under Ceasar, powerless.
As far as combat worthy Lasers go, they'll be around, but not very wide spread. and I've found a way to make the Rail guns fully functional, they'll fire metal spheres loaded with C-4 and containing a detonator programmed by a laser range finder mounted on the turret, gun fires, spheres hits and seconds later detonates.
Oh and America DOES NOT during though 50 years get attacked, we may be more vulnerable and split up, but anyone stupid enough to attack only not only get throughly wipped, but would likly reunite the country under a mutually respected leader.

Why load the spheres with HE? Make them aerodynamic and just shoot through stuff. If you can solve the power problems in making and managing one of these, then just ripping through stuff will do more than enough.

Hmm.... good point, thanks. Not sure why I didn't think of that...
BTW any ideas on how to get all of the nukes to go away?

Nuking stuff isn't really practical if you want to keep it. That's reason enough to not use any except as deterrent weapons.
Money is another concern. It takes incredible sums to build a nuclear program, and a whole lot to keep those nukes safe and in working order. One reason the Soviets were so eager to reduce the number of nukes was just that, money. They couldn't afford it anymore.
The ones that can afford keeping nukes will probably reserve them for the same thing the Israeli do. Namely for a 'Samson' or total nuclear retaliation against an attacker who gets too close to population centers.

Ok, because I have gone back to work I have been unable to post the revisions in my storyline (it's 2:21 AM and the only reson I'm typing this is because I can't sleep)
Anyway the story itself will take place a two generations AFTER the unification of most of the world (large chunks will still be independant or so sparsly populated that noone can really claim ownership)
As for the storyline, it will be sometime in the future (still need ideas on a date) Guns never were invented.
Historical changes:
Constantinople never fell and the Byzantine Empire rather than Italy became the birthplace of the Renissance.
Africa remained primarily uncolonized.
The United States became a major world power Prior to the Napoleonic Wars and Allied itself with England against Napolean (Louisiana, Texas, California and everything inbetween were taken, not purchased)
Japan remained under the Tokugawa Shoguns
China remained under it's Emporers
The Native Americans were largly assimilated into the White society rather than being seperated
I need ideas on other changes to be made, thanks

I don't know much about Scandanavian History, so if you could give me a general Idea as to how big the Empire would be, and why it came into being it would be useful. Thanks.
