Would like to see what this board's favorite era is for playing CBT. (not necessarily fiction wise)

Well, definitely 3025. I sometimes can live with 3050 and the start of the Clan invasion. Mostly because that's before all this cheesy tech came out for the IS. _________________ Mordel Blacknight - Site Administrator

Anywhere from 3025 to 3050 for the tactical game when I do bother with it.
I'd say 3050.
For the RPG... don't ask.

Oh yeah... in case you didn't notice, you don't have to put POLL in your subject, because when you add a poll to your topic, the board does that automatically. _________________ Mordel Blacknight - Site Administrator

I like the clan invasion and 3050, but 3025 has the best atmosphere and setting. It just had a flavor about it that made it fun to play.
Oh man, I'm starting to turn into one of those old-timers who yaks about the "good ol' days."

All of them. Each era offers Tactical and Strategic challenges. I find the story line going no now to be far more exciting then the what the game was stuck in for nearly 10 years.

True. But I feel a lot of that strategy and tactical challenge was taken away when the Clans came out. Not because I feel the clans were bad. I think it was a good plot. I think what made it bad was how players took the clans and "munchkinized" them. They ignored the Clan Codes and used just the technology. They forget the only reason the Inner Sphere had a chance fighting them was because the Clans always used far inferior numbers. _________________ Mordel Blacknight - Site Administrator

And Honorable one-on-one Combat as a base standard. In the IS, this makes for a narrow vision of the battlefield.

I think Mordel's issue is (and it's mine as well) Clan players using Inner Sphere "tactics".
Correctly playing Clanners means following the rules of honor for that particular Clan, not just abandoning all honor rules once the IS players start attacking multiple mechs.
When the "Spirit" of the Clans are followed then there is never an issue as their supperior technology is equaled by their adhearance to their Honor code. It's when people play Clans like a merc unit or a House unit that I (and many others) have issues.

Yes, and as chihawk will confirm, I once won one of his events at TotalCon playing the Clan side. Not because I beat up on the Inner Sphere opponents, but because I killed my fellow Clanners because they were disobeying the clan codes of combat and honor.
I truly, honestly feel that playing the Clans can be VERY fun and challenging, so long as you keep those rules in mind and follow them. And as my Star-mate can attest to that day, when you fail to follow those rules, I tend to get agitated.
It was quite funny actually. I started blasting my teammate and everyone playing an Inner Sphere 'mech sort of looked at each other with surprise in their eyes and backed out of weapons range and just sat there until I killed him. Of course, then I was completely outnumbered, but I'd rather lose an honorable battle then win one ingloriously. _________________ Mordel Blacknight - Site Administrator

I remember that event very well
The look on the IS players faces was very funny, but the look on your starmate's face was a classic--much better than the "deer cought in headlights" look He stormed off right after you killed him, but returned shortly after and admitted himself that he acted in a manner that was against Clan Honor.
I try and avoid having friends win my events (at TotalCon there are prizes for every event winner), but even people playing different games on neighboring tables said you should be the winner.

The answer is "of course".
That's the drawback of the Clans...their Honor handicaps them, which is the "negative" of their weapon's greater abilities.

Bah.. So what. Sound tactics always defeats the biggest of munchkins. Anyone can use Clan toys and go bang bang. Munchlords are only as good as their toys. They don't have any tactics. They just put the biggest freaking guns on the field with a Targeting Computer and believe they are going to defeat you. Try taking a PLG-4Z Pillarger up against one and see how long they take before they start crying foul and you are a cheater. Stealth Armor is wonderful against taking out Munchkinlords! Now do with with a lance of Stealth Mechs against the Clan Wannabe players. They'll either quit or change their tunes. I've yet found or played against a Munchkinlord I couldn't piss off by using tactics and eventually they quit or do something stupid and I blow them out of their 100 ton Pulse/TC Alpha striking Clan technological nightmare.
